As a high-end which is 7970 it ages well and you can justify it being a power-hug but not as a mid-range. Mid-range cards are sweet spot not only for price but also on power consumption and heat output.

Aren't you one of the people calling RX 480 bad?

Er what?

I can't follow your logic.

280x was mid range to high end card and it was awesome for the money. The end.

Because it makes a big difference from 150-160 watt to 190.

Also i didin't know that a card should have a specific power consumption to justify the title mid range.

If only i could get a "mid -range" 1080/70 for the money of 1060 i would recommend it all day long just like i did with the 280x over the 760 and the 770.

You make fun of yourself sometimes so hard.

A 480 8 gb cost around 250-280 here. So a higher clock 480 with a better cooler for the same money it is a bad deal right?

You are trying way too hard wink.gif

Maybe next time try to link a 24 hours sale sales + rebate gpu just to justify yourself.

For 30 bucks more you get a better gpu
You have no idea...

280x for the price was the best gpu. Even after 5 years tahiti is a beast of a chip.
380/380x was a flop.
480 is equal to the 1060. So what's wrong with that?

If an rx 480 8gb costs 250-280 where you live now, the rx580 is likely going to be 300 to 350 when it is released. The pricing of rx480/470 have fallen everywhere in the world compared to it's launch msrp. This is a disappointing launch from AMD because every time it rebranded a card recently, it was a much lower price. The 7970 in particular. It went down in price from $550 to $299 with the 280x. Heck even the 7970 ghz edition which came out with 13.5% faster clocks and 9% faster memory and came out only 6 months after then 7970 was 50 bucks cheaper still.

This is the same launch price as the rx480 which should be disappointing for anyone not an AMD fanboy because this is the first time AMD has done it. Even Nvidia rebrands are cheaper so this is just weird of AMD to do. For AMD being the value company in the industry, this is just unlike them.

People who said, wait for the rx5xx series before you buy an rx4xx are likely now saying, go buy an rx4xx now because of the lower prices.

This move is likely to slow the marketshare gains of the rx5xx series and most importantly leave them open to a counter by Nvidia which is reminicent of the R9 285 to gtx 970 launch. R9 285 was priced pretty high for an AMD card and considering the market pricing at the time, it was simply a lackluster launch.

Nvidia is launching something on the 29th. With the pricing of the rx580 series, if Nvidia is launching another card, this AMD launch allows Nvidia to be the hero again which will be reflected in reviews. When combined with their brand superiority, ultimately leads to spectacular sales while AMD sales crumble like the gtx 970 launch.

E.g if Nvidia launches a $329 gtx 1075 which is right in between of the gtx 1070 and 1080 in performance, it will be goodnight for the rx580 much like the r9 285 before it. And AMD won't be able to do a things because they already got their review chance with the rx580.

You are overthinking way too much while you don't have any facts.

Also a 1060 6gb cost more so why AMD should price it below 200 for a high end model. We are talking about a high end custom model from gigabyte that costs 260.

Also the prices here will be the same. Here in europe we just have the 23% taxes. A custom 8 gb model like the gaming x cost like 320 bucks right now. If the gigabyte costs 260 without taxes it will be about the same price as the custom 480 .

Also a lower end model of 580 could cost around 200 bucks without taxes.

You're just guessing Scorpio has Polaris. The PS4 pro already has Polaris with 16bit Vega mod, Scorpio might have the little Vega.

Eurogamer mentioned that it's based on Polaris, but I wouldn't go calling that the absolute truth, especially with the mentions of custom features implemented. The GPUs are not directly copied from existing cards or the other way around, and with them being on the same die as the CPU and I/O it shouldn't take a genious to figure that out.

I could only find a reference to Polaris in a comparison of clockspeed. It seemed as though they were pretty clear that Scorpio did not have Polaris compute units. Also, the full Scorpio chip has (11/10)*40 or 44 compute units (seen that number in Hawaii). Still, not a confirmation that it is little Vega, just a refutation that it is Polaris.

Assumptions about my opinion?

Also assumptions about what? Can you just not accept that i believe that the 580 is not that of a bad choice compared to a 480?

You can just disagree man and not get triggered like that.

If you cant just accept my opinion then the problem is on you.

Since we know how polaris performs, and the RX 580 is simply a higher clocked part (making it's performance easy to extrapolate), I don't think I'd call the RX 580 a worthy upgrade over a 290X either. It will beat the 290X in most games, but not enough to be a compelling upgrade.

I really don't see a 1100mhz core / 1500mhz mem 290x losing at 1440+... and that's only 50mhz faster on the core vs a stock 390x. Regardless, I'm still using this 290x at 4k so a 580 will likely be a downgrade for me if anything.

I need no less than gtx1080 performance.. ideally 1080ti performance or higher at this point. No crossfire or sli for me.
