7600k stable one night but not other night!

Thread Starter
hi all,

It's been since I overclock but just recently built a new pc around 7600K + asus z270K with 16g corsair 2666mhz.

I have been playing around conservative overclocks and manage to get 4.8ghz @ 1.34v and 4.7ghz @ 1.28v - both running 5-7 hours x264 16T modified, RealBench and Prime95 v26.6 (older non AVX version). They do not however pass IBT.

But here's my question, despite passing 5-7 hours one night, if i were to re-run the testing another day it could fail. Usually the failure happens pretty quick. So i wondered whether it was my windows or anti virus or something and I have reinstalled window once and used new anti virus. Because to me it's bizarre if it passes one night and another time it may fail.

I've OC'd before so i kinda know when i'm hitting a voltage that's stable and just matter of fine tuning. Up until 1.34v @ 4.8ghz things definitely unstable but at this volt i was hopeful.

The second thing I noticed is when that happens, bumping more vcore doesn't really help. I've bump my 4.8ghz up to 1.38v and that still happens.

I have NOT touched any settings on my bios other than manually setting 48 and vcore.

Some screen shots attached.

thanks all!

Your version of Prime95 is extremely old. That might be why. ;) You're not even really doing a stability test...

If you can pass some prime/realbench, but not IBT, i don't think you ate stable at the setting you are at.

What tests are you running in prime? Small get? Try a blend test and see if it fails. You could have a memory issue if that is the case.

What are your memory voltage, speed and timings. If you are using XMP, disable it and put the timings and speed in manually. Try bumping memory voltage up a little and see if there is a change in the stability tests.

"Small get"? It's "Small FFTs".

Anyway, look at what version of Prime95 he has. It's extremely old. It's not really effectively testing the stability at all.

Yes, small fft, auto correct on mobile.

The version of prime should be updated... but decent enough for testing non avx instructions.

The avx instructions will need more voltage, which is probably why it fails instantly... but it could also be that he's not testing the memory with prime, and it is in it, so it fails...

hi all,

As you see from my screen shots I'm using x264 16T modified (per overlock.net), prime95 (yes old one but supposed best before AVX) and RealBench. It passed all 3 - so even if the Prime95 is old, RB and x256 should be good indications. The issue is another day it may not pass again. So i had wondered if it's some windows update or anti virus or something going on.

As for memory setting - i've NOT touch anything. Not even XMP. I could try entering the default values - i may need to research how i do that in the Asus z270-k prime motherboard. The memory i have is below - which should be: 16-18-18-35 @ 1.2v.

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-lpx-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-dram-2666mhz-c16-memory-kit-black-cmk16gx4m2a2666c16?utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_source=PCPartPicker%2C+LLC-2993279&utm_term=3938566&utm_content=&utm_campaign=12661062&Link_name=Corsair+US+Product+Catalog

I've been using Prime95 on SMALL FFT...i can try blended to remove potential memory issue. Or would anyone suggest another non AVX version of Prime to use?

thanks all!

Why non-AVX? Wasn't that only a problem for Haswell CPUs?

I thought AVX is too much stress and non-realistic since most people won't use anything with AVX. But that's what I read especially on this thread:

I guess proper stability testing is being abandoned. When you have overclocked a CPU, it must be tested thoroughly and properly.

Also, they recommend version 27.9 over version 28.10 just for the sake of having lower temperatures, but they say that 28.10 is still ok to use if you want a harder test of your system's stability. The reason for recommending 27.9 is, it's the last version that didn't use the AVX2 instruction set.

You're changing huge amounts of variables when you overclock, so it's critical to make sure that the entire CPU is tested as much as you can. So, you also want to use "Blend" because it will include the memory controller.

Try 1.25-1.3vdimm on the memory, and run IBT, see if it passes. If not, then i would suspect vcore not being high enough. It looks like you have plenty of vcore for the speeds you are running, which makes me think that tree memory may need a bump up.

Up to 1.35vdimm is considered normal voltages, so I would ramp it up a little and see if it helps.

Are you getting any BSODs? Or just getting error messages?
