How does the Marathon project work?

The Marathon project, unlike the other disciplines, will run for the duration of the Pentathlon.

Project Specific Information:

  • Cosmology@Home has two types of apps.
    • The camb_legacy tasks can be run on any x86 or x86-64 CPU without Virtual Box
    • The camb_boinc2docker and planck_param_sims can only be run on a x86-64 CPU, with VT-x or AMD-V enabled, and Virtual Box installed on the host system

app_config.xml:

<app_config>
    <app>
        <name></name>
    </app>
</app_config>

*Note* app_config.xml is currently empty, and will be updated if there are any optimizations for the project.

We could know the project for this in about 11 hours!  But reading this I guess we won't know exactly when they will announce it.

Quote:
 While every discipline starts and ends at 00.00 UTC, the projects may be announced at different times (00.00 UTC, 06.00 UTC, 12.00 UTC, 18.00 UTC) to avoid that some teams are always surprised in their sleep.

The Marathon Project is Cosmology@Home

Code:

Seems to work at blocking internet access in hosts file for me.

Nice if someone could confirm.

@2002dunx As our number one Cosmology cruncher any tips and tricks?  I haven't ran much Cosmo since they added the VBox wrapped tasks.  How do the non-VBox tasks compare to the performance of the VBox tasks?

@Finrond looks like you are also crunching Cosmo right now.

post #6 of 242

I hit a limit on tasks in progress with way less than 5 days.

More instances. smile.gif

I started it up and it was progressing fairly quickly on my 3770k but didn't actually see any task using the CPU. Even the wrapper was using no CPU. Only E@H was using the CPU for GPU tasks. The other 4 threads were idle.

Yes I'll give that a shot in the morning, I have enough work until then.

App_config file I see in their faq that can reduce the # of CPUs per task
Code:
<app_config>
    <app>
        <name>camb_boinc2docker</name>
        <max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
    </app>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>camb_boinc2docker</app_name>
        <plan_class>vbox64_mt</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
    </app_version>
</app_config>

Based on the tasks that I have I would need a 2nd app.
Code:
<app_config>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>camb_boinc2docker</app_name>
        <plan_class>vbox64_mt</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
    </app_version>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>planck_param_sims</app_name>
        <plan_class>vbox64_mt</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
    </app_version>
</app_config>

I haven't tried it yet but edit this line to change the # of CPUs per task and I would remove the concurrent task part.
Code:
<avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>

The limit for me was 80 tasks.  That is a mix of legacy tasks (34 tasks) and VBox tasks (46 tasks).
