[Various] [Updated] New processors are now blocked from receiving updates on old Windows - Page 2

Who cares!
Just ordered an i3-7100 CPU and a H270 m-ITX MB. Will run Win7 for games and Linux for Home Office work on it.
First thing doing before activating Windows, is turning off Win Update and other MS bloatware and useless settings (services).

Linux updates might be a pain when almost every comp start shows available updates, but the result is a fully updated Linux for important home office works and unsecured and flawed Windows for gaming.

The comp will mostly be used for home office work but also for entertainment, like video and music-player as well as for games
The new one will actually replace 2 older computers one laptop and a desktop, one dual booting Linux and Win7 and the other with just Linux. All other comp work is done by our Android phones.

Win10 is getting older and duller by every month, it's from back in 2015 and "Public betas" was around for a year before that. It didn't swayed me to get it for free then and i certainly don't want to pay for it, now 2 years down the road.

One more misleading article, this time from The Tech Report:

http://techreport.com/news/31741/updates-for-windows-7-and-8-1-on-kaby-and-ryzen-are-now-blocked

Not only do they omit the available ways of keeping Kaby Lake and Ryzen systems up-to-date with Windows 7 and 8.1, but they also make a mistake in the following paragraph:
Quote:
Owners of Skylake systems with perfectly-running Windows 7 installations are in a bit of a weird place. Microsoft will support Windows 7 or 8.1 on those systems only until a year and change from now, on July 17, 2018—a deadline that was extended one year from the original date. However, some OEM Skylake systems from a total of 16 manufacturers will still apparently receive updates for the older OSes until their EOL dates. Microsoft still recommends that "these systems be upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as possible."

This is incorrect. TR stopped at Microsoft's first backtrack (and they link to their own story from then, March 2016), but the fact is that they backtracked twice: the first on March 18 2016, a partial backtrack, and the second on August 11, 2016, which was a full backtrack.

In fact, if you click on the original article's edit at the top, directing to the first backtrack from March, you'll see that it doesn't exist and that the page you're landing on is actually from the second backtrack from August.

People on Skylake systems on Windows 7 and 8.1 are fully supported until the end of the respective support periods.

I assumed my settings were still in place from the Windows 7 installation but I guess this was terribly naive of me.

Been using Windows 10 for about 8 months now, its definitely nice but I cant help but feel like this Service is not here to serve me. I didnt pay for Windows 10, and likely never will at this rate.

It was considering they essentially did a full OS reinstall. There are no reason your settings would be copied, especially updates when the whole system changed.

Very first thing after any install, from scratch or not, is to tour the settings.

I had never understood why everyone disliked Windows 10, there is some bloatware, mildly disturbing privacy issues and so on, but these can be "fixed" with a slightly above average computer knowledge.

I didn't understand until a couple of months ago when I received an update.

What the infamous update did!

1. The update, without a warning, restarted my computer. - It happens, why was that such a big deal?.. you might ask.
- Aside from taking 25 minutes to installed (with SSD), it didn't save anything. Tabs, some code and an Excel document, gone.

2. The mouse courser would vanish. Completely. - Did you try to turn it off and on again?.. you might ask.
- Yes! And it worked! Until it vanished again, usually an hour to a week after boot.
- Uninstalled/Installed every driver related to mouse wouldn't fix it.

3. The search stopped working. - what does that even mean?.. you might ask.
- Press the Windows button and type your browser's name, see it? Well, I didn't.
- If the software was recently installed, it wouldn't show.
- If the software was uninstalled, it would still show!
- Uninstall/install Cortana via. Powershell, registry modifications, services stop/start, I tried everything. Keep in mind, the 20 times I reinstalled Cortana meant that all of the bloatware Windows pushes gets reinstalled. Oh, joy!

4. My keyboard was replaced to English US. Twice. - Well, your English is no bueno mate, maybe you should use it more to improve your English.. you might say.
- Not going to lie, you do make a convincing argument.
- However, when I need to type in various strange characters, I need my native keyboard, but it has been replaced.
- Notice replaced not "English US added". My native keyboard was gone.

5. You're unprotected! - Well, get a protection then!.. you might suggest.
- Except before the update, I was "protected".
- At least I know Windows cares deeply about security, I know so because it told me repeatedly over the day I wasn't protected.
- PS. pressing "protect me" button takes you to "Add and remove" and the guessing game begins. In my case, it was Spybot S&D.

6. Full HD on a 14", not on my watch! - It's well-known scaling on Windows is awful, get over it. - you might say.
- I've had virtually zero issues on macOS or Linux, yet every other program I've used on Windows is for some reason a trouble.
- For anyone having this issue, set DPI to 120% and disable it if programs are "blurry". Results may vary.

I'd been holding off going back to Linuxville, after all, Windows has Bash, all the libraries, tools and add-ons I use are available with a package manager (eg. npm) or simply git.

However, after that dreadful experience, I finally jumped back to Debian, how I could have ever left Linux I'll never understand.

But the icing on the cake is reading articles like this one and laugh when people complain that their $200 spyware isn't working anymore.
