Alternatively those who wish to use free software can also set it up with Proxmox but it is some work but it's extremely easy compared with setting it up in Ubuntu, Mint or any other distro.

Edit: I am in the process of migrating my Plex server from Win 8.1 to Linux with the hope of ceasing to use M$py in the future and possibly only run Windows as a VM with PCI passthrough. I intend to either buy UnRAID or try and get passthrough working in Proxmox as I have come to like open source and or free software.

It's relatively simple to set it up in Arch or Fedora relative to Ubuntu/Mint as you'll have current kernels and packages, QEMU/KVM support is good, and there isn't an annoying apparmour situation to work around. That said, it's still daunting to newcomers and Arch and Fedora aren't necessarily the friendliest distros to neophytes, either. The Arch wiki has an excellent writeup on the topic, though. With a modern UEFI friendly GPU it's (mostly) painless and performance is acceptable. I couldn't run my workstation any other way. I occasionally need W10 but it is unacceptably goofprone and has a habit of reverting best-practices settings, so I save myself the grief by running it in a stale VM.

I would rather just use UnRAID as it doesn't need any work doing to it to enable passthrough.

Fair point. Just wanted to point out for posterity that the process varies in terms of headaches depending on the distro and its design philosophy.

I understand it's Microsoft's software. I understand wanting to push for the latest and greatest. But blocking support isn't... right. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing my decision caused this much uproar. Over something so trivial and petty.

And when did 8.1 become "old". End of mainstream support, January 9, 2018. End of extended support, January 10, 2023. So why, using a legit reason not swayed by $$$, block security updates just because someone decided to buy new hardware? I know I'm not reading into it further, just posing a question. Reading into it would probably trigger me somehow.

I haven't seen these notices, every system I have is on 10, but I can imagine being reminded constantly.

If MS has made any error IMO its in the ridiculously long amount of support they promise for their OS. They should immediately change their policy of support to half what it has been, if not even less. What exactly are people going to do about it? Windows is the only viable OS for the PC and its been that way for 20+ years. What's the point of having that kind of market dominance if you are unwilling to dictate terms to your customers rather than the other way round? They could even promise support ONLY until the next version is released if they wanted to. The only thing I do agree with the anti-MS zealots is that basic security updates should be continued for a lengthy amount of time and those security updates should always remain isolated updates (not packaged with other updates) simply because they might run into legal issues otherwise. But all the rest of these updates are not at all necessary to keep the OS usable and should be reserved for only users of the latest software IMO.

I tried passthrough in Mint a year ago and I couldn't get it working. After a week I was tired and gave up and don't want to try on xbuntu as it's just a massive headache.

Your system makes me :sozo::sad-smile. I'm really jealous.

I can believe that. About a month ago on a lark I installed Ubuntu on one of my machines and attempted to use my normal passthrough method. Took about three hours to work my way around apparmour after flailing about fruitlessly for most of that time. I'd assume Mint's similar philosophy of protecting the end-user (who is oftentimes new to Linux) probably puts up a similar fight. Thankfully, UnRAID and other tools exist to bridge that gap, and I'm sure you'll find passthrough quite sufficient as it works well enough even for AAA resource-hog games and power-hungry workstation apps.

And thank you kindly :D, I just couldn't resist early adoption this time around. I'm extremely pleased with this system. Very keen on the APU's and mobile options as well.

I personally don't see the issue, at least for myself. There's some bloatware and updates but none of it affects me in my day to day use. All of the issues people talk about I have never ran into. Games work fine, and any internet usage works fine. The only issue I've been running into is my CPU temps are higher but that is an issue on my end most likely. I'm not going to say everyone is wrong or anything of the sort. I guess people use their computer far more and to much greater depths than I do. I mean, really how many programs do people have on their PCs on overclock.net? Like I'm genuinely curious. I just don't have the time to sit on my computer and run any sort of customization I can find on it. I keep it pretty basic

Nvidia GTX 1070 - after creators update, DSR 4k no longer works, and when i do 1080p 100hz overclock through nvidia control panel, games no longer read it... so I'm stuck with 60hz again until it gets fixed.

congrats to you for not having any issues though.

Me and a friend are looking into unRAID vs XEN then as well.

Were both kind of tired of Windows breaking everything all the time. Creators update was abyssmal for his system and did it while he was gaming at that lol

I'd like to get off Windows as the main OS, but I still need DirectX for games naturally.
