That assumes such life, should it be discovered, is related to us. It's quite likely that life arose independently, multiple times, on Earth, and that life found elsewhere, even in our own system, to have no relation to life here.

This is actually one of the most interesting questions, in my opinion, that would be answered by finding life on one of the outer planet's moons. If it is DNA/RNA based then we can assume panspermia is probably correct (maybe an intra solar system limited version) and if not then life is probably very common.

I really doubt life would germinate out there. There's no way it could ever progress or become sentient or have a fulfilling existence out there in a cold dark ice world. Without any hope of progression Life would never even begin.

Are you conflating intelligent life with life? I don't think the possibility of having a fulfilling existence had any bearing on life developing on Earth. redface.gif

Also it isn't that cold in these moons, tidal heating keeps it relatively warm; this is why these moons are so interesting.

Even if it could germinate it would simply die off without any hope of evolution. Deep dark cold not exactly paradise.

What?! Have you seen where life happily lives and evolves here on Earth? There are basically no conditions that life doesn't like to live in here. Deep sea methane lakes are very cold and dark but there is a lot of life there.

Don't assume life needs conditions you would like to live in to thrive. rolleyes.gif

On top of this, plenty of these places NASA is looking at aren't cold.

Some of these moons with subsurface oceans have more liquid water on them than Earth does.

Several videos of the announcement livestream are also online for those interested.

Won't matter, the life we will find in our own system will probably be microbial, and people will just argue that we contaminated the testing equipment somehow.

That's exactly what I was thinking... which is awesome to imagine... having life so close to us just speaks volumes as to what's out there in the universe... Definitely increase the probability of there actually being mammal like beings or even intelligent beings...

Also, just because humans need warm environments doesn't mean other intelligent life does. They may be weird looking octopuses.
