"The PWM version was disappointing, however, as it displayed a massive drop in fan speed such that a lot of the 1000-1400 RPM range was left unusable and this can’t be excused for a fan that is rated at 1400 RPM to begin with. At this time, I recommend going with the DC version and having voltage control over the fan speed instead. If things change in the future, and hopefully they do, then it is a different story of course."

The BQ's are fantastic. I bought all of these fans to figure out which ones I want to use when I do up a loop in the SMA8 I have coming. The BQ's are the fans im going with. Not only were they the quietest fans overall, they also cooled my rad the best at low RPM's. I didn't have any PWM issues, I think the Aquaero might have problems with them. I'm going to get an Aquaero, so I'll see if the fans I have have the same issue as the review, if so I may go with the non-PWM. I plan on running a constant 800-900 RPM anyhow, so PWM isnt super important.

yep, being a certain DB is meaningless also. 25db from one fan may be purely an air movement sound, where as 25db from another may include a nasty motor noise.

Also on top of this you can run the ML120 SLIGHTLY faster because of its DB rating

Yeah. But the thing is that at 1000RPM, you get more or less 125FPM for the SW3 and only 100FPM for the ML120.

This graph is for fans with a MAX speed of 2201-3000 but were run slower down to their limit

This, at least according to VSG/thermalbench:
http://thermalbench.com/2016/10/21/be-quiet-silent-wings-3-120-mm-high-speed-fan/3/

Negligible, sure, but as long as we're speaking from a dataset...

More or less, yes. To put it simply, static pressure indicates a fan's ability to push air, CFM indicates how much air is pushed.

So can you say that the SW3 is the best among the bunch (even beating the GT 2150 PWM)?
Neither personally (haven't tried them redface.gif) or objectively, but according to thermalbench testing, yes, at lower RPMs.

You're right, I'm aiming for better performance at lower fan speeds but is the radiator of the H220X aimed for lower speed fans?
That is a good question, we should probably just ask the horse smile.gif@geggeg

@geggeg

Since we're mostly talking about your reviews here, I'd appreciate it if you can chime in :)

For 120mm

1.) Do you think the 1000-1400PWM issue in your BQ SW3 tests is attributed to the Aquaero?

2.) Without that issue, can you say that the BQ SW3 is better than the Corsair ML120 Pro's?

3.) How about the Phanteks PH-F120MP, does it come 3rd place after the two above?

For 140mm:

1.) Which is best between the Corsair ML140 Pro's and Phanteks FH-140MP's?

1) Yes and no, the Aquaero follows one standard and be quiet! another. Neither was accepting fault back then, and I don't think anything has changed. The point is some PWM controllers will have this issue, and I can't say which will or will not.

2) Negligible difference performance/noise wise. Go with other factors such as aesthetics, price point, customer support in your local region.

3) & 4) Depends on the airflow restriction, PH-F1x0MP does a decent job from a noise perspective, not pure performance. So higher the airflow restriction, the worse it will relatively perform.

The @thing hasn't worked consistently for me btw, so best to PM a reminder in case I don't chime in.

I really like my vardars f4120er using them on a voltage controler so i can really only slow them down below 600-700rpms but to me they have a good sound i had some cooler master fans previous and they drove me nuts even at lowest rpms and i love that the vardars come in white.

1.) I'm hoping someone with experience with the BQ SW3 using onboard PWM controllers can share their experiences.

2.) As you know I'm aiming for low noise operation but if ever I want to have the "capability" of turning the speeds up for maximum performance, I'm sure you would recommend the ML120's over the SW3's, correct? Or do I just get the SW3 High Speed PWM? Are SW3 High Speed and Low Speed PWM's similar in performance given the same fan speed?

3.) Ok, so for pure performance and radiator (restriction) operation, I take it that the PH-F1x0MP's are not a good choice. Which 140mm do you recommend then?

4.) Are both ML120 and SW3 pressure-optimized designed for rads?
