What would you do, as a developer, if you had in your hands a spectacularly efficient engine for the graphical fidelity it produced, good movement mechanics, and decent physics, and you had a game to release within a short time frame?
Sure, they could iterate on what they had to realize a somewhat better engine, but perhaps the small improvement would require an inordinate amount of development time for a non-tangible feeling in the player that would help to no extent to maintain servers populated.
I mean, really, was the resemblance to the BF franchise what made people hate the game?
I still haven't played shooters on the technical level of BF4 and BF1, and i've played a lot of them.
