DP to Dvi cable - 144hz

Thread Starter
Unsure if this is the right place to post.

As per title, can I run 144hz on a dp to dvi cable? I.e Monitor dp port to gpu dvi, using a full length cable instead of adaptor.
DVI-D (dual link) yes, DVI-I no.

you'll most likely need an active dual link dvi adapter (which is expensive) in order to run that high of a refresh rate. be wary of adapters that advertise display port -> dual link dvi that are cheap as they most likely are only single link dvi.

this is what you will need
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400320&cm_re=active_dual_link_displayport-_-12-400-320-_-Product

the guy above talking about dvi-i just means that the cheap dvi -> vga adapters will not work if you were trying to go dp -> dvi -> vga but that is irrelevant since that is not what you are trying to do.

I misread the post. I thought your GPU was DP and monitor was dual link DVI.

You cannot go from gpu dvi output to dp monitor input.

Cheers for the reply. So the item, link below, would not work to run at 144hz?

A simple cable will not work.

In fact your conversion is the reverse of standard active adaptors - they are DP (gpu) to DVI (monitor).

There are a few HDMI/DVI to DP active adaptors but I've never seen one above HDMI 1.0 spec (1920x1200 @ 60hz).

I received my monitor and my gpu dp port is confirmed not working, no signal to 2 different monitors.

Plugged in a hdmi 1.4a and nvidia control panel allows the option for 1080p 120hz. Am I actually running it at 120hz on Windows and games or the refresh rate would decrease to 60hz for whatever reason?

No, the only way to connect to a DP input port on a display is from a native DisplayPort source, or from an expensive active adapter. DisplayPort to DVI cables and DisplayPort to HDMI cables only work DisplayPort output (GPU) to DVI/HDMI input (display), not the other way around, and furthermore passive adapters/cables are limited to Single-Link DVI, it is not possible to make a DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI passive adapter/cable.

If it says 120 Hz in windows, you're running at 120 Hz.

updated my post. i misread the OP. Usually when you post a conversion, you post output source -> input source. So you want DVI to DP conversion, which cannot be done.

have you tried using a different displayport cable to make sure your display port outputs are not working?

What is the model of graphics card and monitor you are trying to hook up?
