what can i expect from this setup in terms of overclocking

Thread Starter
ok so im wondering what speeds/performance and such that i can expect in terms of overclocking my cpu using this setup below is a list of my parts that will be used in my pc build

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 E0 Revision (Wolfdale-6M)
MEMORY: 2 gigs ddr2 800
CPU COOLER: corsair air series a70 link to info on the cpu cooler http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3568/corsair_air_series_a70_high_performance_cpu_cooler/index.html
motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L (rev. 1.0) http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-G31M-S2L-rev-10#ov

for those who ask the vrm's will be cooled with VRM's heatsinks as well as by having air blown over them via a fan need any more information ask away

im just curious as to what i can expect in terms of a decent overclock i do plan to push this cpu as high as it goes since all of the parts listed cost me under 50$ used most of it was free

While overclocking is free, and 4 GHz is possible, you would see a much bigger performance gain by updating your CPU to a quad core than by overclocking your dual core. And upgrading to 4 gigs of 1066 memory would also show a big improvement. You could do those for less than $50. Once you do those, then try overclocking for a little more performance.

the 1066 memory is only supported via overclock meaning i can only use up to ddr2 800 then when i overclock it will become 1066
post #4 of 13
No, you need to install 1066 memory. When you boot up by default it will run at 800 MHz. Then you can overclock it to 1066.

To get 800 MHz memory to run at 1066 MHz you'd have to run very loose timings, thereby negation most, if not all, of the performance boost of running it at 1066.

Yes, that means that if you put in 1066 memory it won't run at 1066 unless you overclock it. It will run at 800 by default.

Maybe if you download CPU-Z and look at the SPD tables for your 800 MHZ memory you will see that as memory speeds go up, timings get looser (ie, slower).

Here's a SPD tab for 1066 memory:

And here's a SPD tab for 800 memory:

Note the difference in timings for both at 800 MHz.. If you tried to run the 800 MHz memory at 1066 MHz (overclock) you would have to use timings like 6, 6, 6, 22, 26. Much slower than the 5, 5, 5, 15, 30 that 1066 memory uses.

What power supply do you have?
You can throw another 2gig of 800 in there.
Just look for the same timings and voltage.
2gig is barely enough.

Xp - WOW!

End Of Support

"After 12 years, support for Windows XP ended April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 10"
