[Guru3D] Intel 300 series chipsets to integrate USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Gigabit WIFI

Intel is going to release two new platforms in the coming months which consists of the X299 HEDT based CPUs and the other is the mainstream Coffee Lake based CPUs.

The upcoming Intel mainsteam chipset is known as the 300 series and we can expect that the top end chipset would be called Z370 which ironically sounds similar to AMDs X370 chipset.

Integrating Wi-Fi on the chipset is, in my opinion, a big mistake. If that part of the system is compromised, it will make the system extremely vulnerable and much more difficult to fix.

That's a door to the outside that, if compromised, is nearly impossible for regular people to determine if it's broadcasting or not and another big trouble to actually turn off, if even possible at that point.

I would hope that they at least would implement a physical switch off button, but knowing how these things are done on the cheap nowadays it will be a nearly worthless software switch.

But are not all Laptops, phone etc wifi already. What makes this different?

Jumper or a switch, yeah.

I guess you could get a Faraday cage if you're really worried and the option to physically disable it is unavailable.

It's not any different, typical OCN reaction. If anything this will help the average consumer become more connected.

On another note I don't find Intel's use of Z370 ironic, their naming scheme has been set this way since P67.

Yes, and that doesn't make it ok either. Think about the substance of the matter. The same thing with IoT devices. If it becomes infected with malware how do you solve the problem? Turning off the software switch will just be ignored, it's perpetually compromised. And then after a certain age, it's planned obsolescence for sure, as all firmware security vulnerabilities will be left unpatched.

In this case, it's more serious because this is a desktop chipset. Imagine if the enterprise chipsets come with it too. How will a company be able to secure systems if there is a wireless door that can't be taken out or securely disabled? And how will customers in general be able to know that a system is compromised with malware that uses Wi-Fi to communicate? It's nearly invisible.

A person could raise that objection before the inclusion of basically every integrated component as technology has progressed through the last thirty years. I wouldn't worry about it more than integrated NIC controllers, integrated USB controllers, or anything else. If you want to worry about something, worry about the system management agent. If it fails, your motherboard is a brick. If it's compromised, you can't do anything about it because your system can't even see it.

That type of conflation doesn't make sense. A USB or Ethernet port can't communicate with the outside unless something is physically connected to it.

Wifi you need close proximity. Local you need on hand access. To get to that facility you need access either way.
