Phenom II upgrade to Ryzen

Thread Starter
Any idea the kind of performance people might see? Younger brother has an old Phenom II X4 975 and I'm wondering if the bottom Ryzen 5 option would be a viable option to go for if the performance boost is that much better.

Viable ?

R5 will destroy the X4 975 with no mercy !

The diference will be like night and day,

Buy one R5 1600, cheap trills all the way! Decent DDR4 is important too, at least 16Gb @ 2933 should be enought.

I have to agree. Any Ryzen will be a huge upgrade. I just went from a x4 Athlon to an R7 and jumped 40 FPS in WoW at 4K. Plus it gets him onto a newer platform with an upgrade path since AMD will support AM4 for the next several years. thumb.gif

I went from a unlocked 960T x6 @ 3.5 to a 1700 (stock for now) and on an old game like ultima online my CPU usage went from 18-25% per client (sometimes I was running 4 clients avg 80% usage) to around 2% usage per client.

I know its not a R5 but figured I would throw CPU usage on a old game out there for ya.

Is 8GB just not enough anymore? DDR4 is getting more expensive. frown.gif

I gotcha covered for the speed thing though. ^^

Same thing effectively, just more cores. redface.gif

Any idea on the motherboard I should use? Ryzen makes me feel like I'm a complete noob all over again. redface.gif

Is there any concrete benefit to grabbing 16GB over 8GB though? He doesn't stream or do anything other than play games.

I will invest in 16GB if it's really a bonus to it... but otherwise spending another $60 for another 8GB of RAM just doesn't seem justified. This is gonna be his PC for the next few years really and if I have to upgrade later I will. He's got 6GB of memory right now, seems to do well enough.

I went from a 3.8GHz X6 to a 1700 at 3.8GHz and not only I got three times as much power, I also cut the power consumption nearly in half.

Yep, even the ryzen 1400 would be a huge leap in performance

About the RAM, I'd be quite surprised if 8GB would be insufficient for your little brother's build. It would almost certainly be better to get 8GB of faster ram rather than 16GB of slower ram for gaming. Cas latency is not as important. The only issue is higher CAS kits are not typically the samsung B-die which is easier to run at rated speeds currently. A RAM compatibility patch is coming in May though.

i only game on my pc but i dont really ever go past 5-8gb in day to day but i do hit the 8gb cap. if your going to spend that kinda money on ryzen i think you should take advantage of the dual channel memory the ZEN cpus use memory way more than intel thanks to infinity fabric some games see 15% more fps just from OC the memory higher so if you only use 1 dim your gonna cripple the infinity fabrics bandwidth
