Oh, and Einstein@Home does the same kind of GPU jobs for half the time compared to the nVidia counter part. The R9 290 was doing a GPU job for ~15 mins, the 980 was doing it for 18 mins.

That's the GTX 1080 using GDDR5X on something that it isn't good at.

A GTX 1070 uses GDDR5. Most GTX 1070s are running Equihash.

Check it yourself https://www.nicehash.com/?p=calc

$500 GTX 1080 = Lyra2Rev2 , ROI 159 days for GPU itself; 201 days under $0.25/kwh (Euro zone)
$400 GTX 1070 = Equihash, ROI 144 Days ; 178 days under $0.25/kwh (Euro zone)
$250 RX 480 = DaggerHashimoto , ROI 118 days ; 163 days under $0.25/kwh (Euro zone)
$220 RX 470 = DaggerHashimoto , ROI 116 days ; 151 days under $0.25/kwh (Euro zone)

I get really tired of pointing out that nVidia removed most of their hardware scheduler when they made Maxwell/Pascal and replaced it with software scheduling that relies on the CPU as opposed to AMD that still has its hardware scheduler on die, this is 1 of the main reasons that nVidia was able to lower the power consumption on their cards.

and an admittedly kick ass node from TMSC. The same one being used to put a 1100mhz 40CU rx480 inside the scorpio box. Could you imagine doing the same with GloFo ?

On top of that, we only get the worst binned chips of an already less than stellar node. (on glofo)

I'm not sure it will make any difference seeing as the 500 series is on 14LPC whereas 400 series is on 14LPP.

It's looking like I was wrong about this.

Wait, who cares that its not good for this?

You said that the AMD cards are no good for *THAT* (pointing to your previous comments).

Also, those ROI are HIGHLY questionable. Especiially, since the 1080 does 500h/s on Cryptonight, while as i said stock 470 does 600h/s.

Now, the ONLY PROFFITABLE other alternatives, where the nVidia shines, is the Eth and ZEC. But SHINES only on its own yard, since its still getting pummeled in all other aspects by the RX 470 cards. Also, the 1080 costs twice as much as the 470, yet ONLY performs as good as the 470 in those 2 algos.

Cherry picking is GOOD, but i have at least researched a bit more than you.

Right because the GTX 1070 is PUMMELED in everything else. rolleyes.gif

My point was you can't mine bitcoin directly with any GPU and expect to make money. Nicehash for bitcoin is an indirect form of bitcoin mining.

If you read what you quoted earlier again: there are no advantages over RX 400 series cards. I should have been more specific that I was referring to RX 500 series, but my point was even if you mod it to RX 400 series specs it isn't going to be immensely profitable once you include platform cost and electricity. Once you make it reasonably profitable (i.e. 30 or 60 cards together) you end up with a mining farm you need to cool , which needs even more power unless you live in the arctic.

Also I am fully aware that the pascal cards are slower in OpenCL, I even pointed that out to someone that asked in the BOINC section just this month.

After reading some of the reviews, I am still in a state of total confusion.

---> What exactly is the 500-series?

I mean, it is worse than the predecessor. Practicall a 470 / 480 OCed with maxed clocks and therefore upped power draw as a result. We made fun of it in the other thread if it it will be a Refresh / Rebrand or whatever. Back then there was a chance the new cards could have better TDP or consome less for higher performance. Not the case from what we see now.

When you look at the power consumption and compare it with better cards (only Nvidia available - *sigh*), Polaris is the dud of the century. GCN is walking on its last leg. IF Vega is similar inefficient, not even HBM2 can save it.

I like when they showed the FPS graph they compared the 380 to the 580 and skipped the 480. Sigh...
