6700k All The Sudden Pushing Towards 100c H100i GTX

Hi Friends,

Update: It seems that these temperatures happened after I upgraded to a 1080ti from a 980 maybe this is the reason?

I randomly looked over at my PC window and saw the the H100i GTX Logo was Red = Heat Trouble. I quickly looked at RealTemp and saw that while playing some games I hit 81c which I've never ever seen before.

I'm OC'd to 4.6k and I've ran numerous tests w/o even coming close to 81c. I ran intelburntest real quick just to check and they spiked to 100c in under 3 seconds.

My initial thought was maybe one of the pumps failed on the H100i GTX but in Corsair Link 4 it shows the pumps running at max 3030 RPM. I then went ahead and held down the waterblock to see if it would help and it did reduce temps to high 80s instead of high 90s but still pretty bad. Next step is I loosened each screw around the h100i water block while holding it down and in "X" fashion I redid the seating.

I don't know if anyone has experienced this where just one day your CPU just starts overheating like crazy but I think the next step is to re-apply thermal paste but my gut tells me the h100i GTX pump's failing I just don't know why corsair link would still be showing max RPM for the pump.

Idle temps range from 35-50 depending on core but once I tap any overclocking software it skyrockets to 90+.

Thoughts?

There is an important thing called Core voltage (Vcore) that you should mention in a post related to high temperature CPU.

pump's gone...RA it - happens every now and then.
changing graphics card wouldn't affect CPU temps like that.

1.3v - Like I said I've stressed test this computer correctly at 1.3v - 4.7k and it was flawless. It's all the sudden temperatures our skyrocketing. It must be an issue with the H100i.

Thanks man. The 1080ti heats up my entire office so I thought maybe it was playing a role in the increase CPU Temperatures. The fact that under 100% load my CPU is jumping to 100c definitely sounds like a H100i issue.

Thoughts?

It does sound like the pump has died.Time for a warranty replacement or a new cooler.

Only other thing it could be is poor contact between the cooling plate and the CPU. Especially since you said the temps drop when you apply pressure to the top of the cooling plate/pump. You sure it is tightened down enough with enough thermal compound?

Nope it's been in since October 2015.

Could the thermal paste be out after a year 1/2?

Can the 1080ti heat up the CPU in any way? The 1080ti heats up my office better than my home's heating system.

This is the only hardware of changed since this problem has occurred with the CPU temps sky rocketings. Doesn't sound likely...it's probably a failed water pump. I've ordered a new H100i V2 this morning.

Kind Regards,

Why would you order ANOTHER CLC cooler when there's so many superior options for a marginal price difference?

The AIO watercooling market has changed drastically.

You can now get a copper radiator with copper block. This means up to 2x the heat dissipation vs a aluminum radiator of the same fin density and size plus avoiding the chance of galvanic corrosion.

even with the founders edition 1080 Ti, it wouldn't be such a heater...unless your case isn't getting rid of the hot air.
your H100i should still be under warranty...but since you've already ordered a new one, enjoy.

maybe see if there is any dust build up in the rad or the fans...give it a thorough clean and test again.
I used to have a H110 and temps were going to ~80 under basic load...nothing wrong with the pump or anything, just dirty rad and fans. after cleaning temps went back to normal ~65.

What model 1080ti do you have, blower or open air cooler? How is your radiator mounted, Intake/exhaust? Have you checked the radiator fins for debris, or case filter for clogging? Have you delidded the cpu?

There are many variables, could be a pump issue, but may not be. Could be a cpu lid TIM issue, as you mention pressure on the block lowered temps, so if there is a gap between die and heat spreader, the paste may have dispersed and created a void.

What paste are you using on the block to cpu?
