MSI B350M Mortar - is the best mATX AM4 board ? - Page 3

Because if the VRM were the primary source of the problem you'd be held back by thermal throttling and not voltage. If you need additional vcore to stabilise at a particular clockspeed and you're not thermally limited by the board or chip, then your motherboard VRM and cooling solution are playing less of a role than the quality of the silicon you D20'd.

It does not seem to be able to handle overclocking. Either that or I have bad CPU lottery.

Best I could achieve was:

3700Mhz Core Speed
1.28V core voltage
3 cinebench runs - pass (1642 score)
20 minute CPU-Z stress testrun - pass
Stable temp 71c

3800Mhz Core Speed
1.400V Core Voltage
3 cinebench runs - pass (1684 score)
30 minute CPU-Z stress testrun - pass
Stable temp - 85c

Core voltage has to be set really high to even get 3.8Ghz.

Now Im left wondering what to do. I don't want to regret getting mATX as I really prefer this form factor and love my new Phantek evolv mATX case...

Maybe the new x370 matx board from biostar will be better for overclocking?
Im not an overclocker, then should be good for me ?
Problems in stock frequency ?

I also can't decide which one to buy - b350m Mortar or ab350m pro4. I am liking the fact that MSI got more bios updates and I like the placement of board elements more and it has 4 fan connectors which is just what I need. But asrock has p-state which is nice for overclocking, 3+3 VRM kinda sucks though... I am limited by mATX formate so in my opinion there is just no other alternative to these 2 boards. Asus prime b350m-a is quite nice, but it has no heatsinks at all (but there are mounting holes for it). If it was possible to buy heatsinks from ATX version of this board, then ASUS one could be my choice. Gigabyte has bad VRM components so I don't consider it. Biostar might be good, but there is just not enought information about it, I found just one review of b350m mATX in whole internet and there are almost no feedbacks...

Probably you will see more boards coming out soon with Computex just around the corner.
I'm waiting for asrock to show their stuff. Still hoping they will do a OC-Formula on the Ryzen AM4 tongue.gif

The BioStar B350GT3 Racing does Pstate OCing well. Plus it is easy to do since the Bios does the hex conversion for you, all you have to do is hit the + or -. Anyways I started a review at HardOCP on that board. VRMS wise it has 4 for CPU 3 for SOC and 2 for the ram in which the last two is better than average for this level or price range. No I do not work for Biostar or got paid, it is so far a good board.

So Computex is in full swing, and no sign of those higher-end mATX AM4 boards! rolleyes.gif

it looks like the manufacturers have all been too busy preparing X299 intel boards to spare some love for Small(er)FF AM4 mATX X370/B350 boards. Lets hope June brings some news for the compact Ryzen builds in holding pattern...

FWIW, here's my mATX AM4 feature(wish)-list:

  • Along with smooth power delivery and good heatsinks for OCing, I would add;
  • 3+ Fan headers DC/PWM control switchable.
  • WirelessAC + M.2 or 2 x (PCIe x4) M.2 slots
  • USB3.1 Gen2 Type C + USB3.1 Gen2 Type C header
  • well throught-though PCIe lane sharing — particularly the tight 20 (gen3) usable lanes off the CPU
  • e.g. 2nd PCIe x16 (physical)slot off the CPU to cater for PCI-E (x8)
  • Maybe even a Thunderbolt3 header for later Thunderbolt3 Add-in Card

Dear manufacturers, please take note!

I pulled the trigger on this one and a 1700 with some gskill trident z 16gb kit.. All i want is the combo to get alone nice specially the ram @ 3200 is all i ask lol..

Looking at this mobo it looks cheap compared to my gene iv and gene vi even my impact vi...

AMD m-atx is really lacking...
