290X with 390X bios says "uh, no, not really."

Deja Vu indeed.

Im on a R9 285 flashed to a 380x which uses higher vcore states and has a better VRM. Hard to imagine a working BIOS causing any problems. All these boards, circuits, and chips are designed with tolerances. Vega or bust for me. Should have bought a 290x in hindsight.

I remember the days of flashing 6950 to 6970. Now that was great

Yes it does, but voltage control acts funny and I couldn't get my 470 to go below 1150mv on the core on the highest state. The voltage drops on its own when not loaded but controlling the voltage on a flashed 470 nitro is wonky and VDroop was really bad

Thanks, Rep+.

Is there any comparison of trying to do the same on an RX 570? Maybe that comes with the package, so to speak, or the utilities to control the voltage need to be updated.

Other than that, is your RX 470 fully stable when under load?

I prefer to mod my 480's BIOS for higher power limits and use software voltage control with WattTool. I currently use 1435 MHz using 1.3V. I don't think I would want to take the risk of doing this, considering the only problem I have is needing a hardware reset if I change voltages too many times without restarting.

I have no comparison for doing it on a 570, but yea it was 100% stable at the rated 1340mhz its just when trying to undervolt to my usual voltage (1106mv @ 1350mhz) it would crash. If you leave it alone or don't try to increase/decrease voltage and just use the default 1150mv there's no issue. Also wouldnt use polaris bios editor to mod the bios, do it with a hex editor or it wont boot. I went back to the 470 bios for now because im lazy and dont want to hex edit my voltage. I tried setting voltage in wattman and AB to 1.2v for 1400mhz run but once loaded it would drop to 1.158v which it doesnt normally do on my 470 bios (470 bios only flux - 10mv, )

Edit: on another note The ram performance is similar to if you put the 1500mhz timings in the 1750mhz strap.

only benefit I see is the additional memory mode for running video (puts GPUz reading @ 30w during video instead of 30-60w) but if that's not important to you the rest is mostly a boost to the power limits and additional power plane with the added +6pin connector along with the 8pin (obviously you dont get the added power plane with bios)

the 570 bios never leaves 300mhz core during 60fps video playback with fluid motion and 1000mhz ram but the 470 will hit max 3d clocks and memory bounces between 300-max clocks you set. Definitely a better bios for HTPC

True, I hadn't considered that. I'm usually running BOINC or Folding, but could be good for people trying to save on electricity.
