People wanting to buy the best of the best , will indeed buy from the companies that are monopolizing the high end market all these years..
Having only a couple of companies doing so,results in absurd price to performance ratio though , as we have already seen..

But most people usually buy the best for the money that they have and the performance that they need , and on that account ,AMD is back in the game..

It will be interesting to see how intel will move with their new releases , both in performance and in price..Nobody can deny that AMD has shaken the waters in the market and that is ultimately a good thing for everybody.

if ryzen was crushing 6900k or any broadwell they would have dropped prices. pretty sure they havent changed. has amd market share gone up since ryzen release? curious but i dont think intel cares what amd does. the only thing that will make braodwell drop in price is this not anything amd does.

But they are, in a numbers sense. Especially cost to performance ratio.

Zen's server counterpart is definitely gonna have impact on Intel tho. Since clockspeed >4Ghz & High speed mem is not necessary for servers. Its about performance/watt & price there.

And we all know servers is where the real money is.

i agree cost per performance is a no brainer for amd. im not bashing i think its good for all of us.

That would be my guess as to why Zen for HPC isn't out yet. They've released HEDT and mainstream first to get the media talking and the interest building up while they iron out any issues on the HPC platform.

I wish that AMD would have saved the 1800x moniker for a higher core count part and just had the 1700x be the top sku in the 7 lineup. The 1800x $500 price tag is not as disruptive to Intels pricing model as the 1700x is. If the 1800x was a 10 core or 12 core model at $500-$600 the outlook for pricing from Intel would be much better.

Selling the same chip at three different price points muddies things up and a $500 AMD 8 core will allow Intel to sell a $600 8 core without much trouble. I would much rather be looking at Intel to compete with a $400 8 core than a $500 8 core.

Hopefully the pricing falls in line but like others have said, I don't think they have to compete aggressively on price.... they just have to come reasonably close.

Intel now rebrands i7 with X to distance itself with ryzen 7, what's Intel core Xp? And it's already 2017, quad cores are so 10 years ago and it shouldn't be considered hedt unless it clocks 5ghz stock and 6ghz++ OC with kabylake ipc.

I have no problem paying $100 more($200 maybe) for a skylake 8 core over a 1700/x assuming it clocks to 4.5ghz+

Judging from the 114W TDP I'd be inclined to agree with you - possibly 4.4-4.5GHz base clock?

Well, Kaby Lake 7700k = 91W TDP

Kabylake X = 112W TDP

That's a 23% increase in TDP.

@ 4.8GHz a Kaby Lake 7700k draws 121W. Power draw is often relatively close to the TDP. Therefore with only an 8% difference between the TDP of Kaby Lake X and what Kaby Lake 7700k draws @ 4.8GHz we can assume that the 4.4-4.5GHz base clock with a 4.7-4.8GHz boost clock can be a pretty veracious estimation. Now, this is an even more hopeful estimation because we aren't taking into account that most people overclock all cores (meaning higher power draw), so the 4.8GHz power draw figure would be higher than what a typical Intel Turbo Boost would do (e.g. 7700k = 1 Core = 4.5GHz, then the rest are at the base clock). This evens out our 8% difference.

Which means, surmising that 4.7-4.8GHz is the boost clock on Kaby Lake X isn't far off from reality mathematically. It could be slightly less but based off the numbers it seems realistic.

Otherwise, I have no idea what Kaby Lake X's purpose would be; seeing that it is only a 2 Channel DDR4 configuration and only has 16 PCIe lanes.
