No, I mean, PCIe specifications are indeed a thing, and they do exist for a reason. Your PCIe device, in order to meet specifications, must only pull 5.5A through the 12V pins (66W) and 3A through the 3.3V pins (9.9W) with a combined total of 75W through the PCIe slot. The RX 480 exceeded that. Like, there's literally no argument to be made here. Reference board designs are exceeding the limitations imposed by PCI-SIG and therefore may not carry any logo as a certified PCIe card.

Similar cases exists when a PCIe card contains more than a single 6-pin and 8-pin socket each for additional power. That is not considered standard and therefore may not carry the logo. Nobody makes a fuss about those, however, because it's expected that such a high-power card will be designed so the slot is barely touched. But the RX 480, a budget card that makes a nice upgrade for budget systems? Yeah, there's a bit of an issue there.

It really IS the cheaper alternative... however it's cheaper AND competitive at the same time, and almost with a clock for clock edge to it too. smile.gif

a stock 460 already is very close or above the specs (66W for 12v line from the slot only), if you unlock it/OC it's just to high... I'm even more worried because most people running 460s are also running cheap MBs

that's one thing I think is positive for the 500 series, the 550 doesn't use enough power to require the connector, and the 560 is probably going to always have the connector... the 460 was marginal but realistically should use the connector, while many didn't...

on the heavier games it's slower than a 260X (7790 OC), not surprising, but since we are in 2017 I feel like $79 is a bit overpriced.

The issue of the broken motherboard was reported by a guy who had destroyed his case and it was never proven. What is proven is that nearly all GPU's overdraw on the PCI-E and motherboard makers take that into account as the specification itself is conservative to ensure no damage to boards due to 'overdraw'.

Wait which broken motherboard story? Was that the one I fabricated for /r/PCMasterRace because I thought it was funny?

EDIT: Found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/4rfou0/brand_new_rx_480_just_destroyed_my_motherboard/

i have an htpc with an a10 7860k that could use a single slot low profile graphics card to boost some performance. for a bit now ive debated going dual graphics with an r7 240 or r7 250. but the need for hdmi 2.0 hevc h265 etc. has stopped me. i dont see any single slot low profile rx 550s yet but they are bound to be on the horizon. i will be keeping a close eye at the rx 550 and gt 1030/1040.

that said, i picked up an asus 2gb rx460 about two months ago for $61.xx after a $20 rebate. i flipped that low end rig and the buyer was happy. but i wouldn't be surprised to see the rx550 hit $50 after deals/rebates in the near future.
