[Gamespot] Dota 2 Now requires Your Phone Number to Play Ranked Matches. - Page 3

I don't think this is that big of a deal because the phone number is only for ranked matches. DoTA has been having a lot of issues with booster accounts and smurfs in ranked. This can help reduce that issue.

But I understand the concerns of those who feel uncomfortable giving Valve your phone number.

Pretty sure China does that also. I believe locals have to use their government issued ID to get a SIM. International have to show passport.

If you think it won't be anywhere else you are delusional.
Gaming is very in late in this, every company in the world wants all your information and life story before they do business with you.

Not necessarily true in every line of work, but for the most part you're correct.

They can keep it.

That goes way beyond what I'm comfortable giving out.

Sounds like what they are doing with CSGO Ranked Prime matches, where you need to link your account to a phone number to play Prime matchmaking (non-Prime is 2-3 hackers every single game, at least Prime is 1 hacker every 3-4 games).

Good. Great way to make cheaters pay even more. Either get your phone number banned from making any accounts, or go buy a new sim everytime you get banned. In this case, it looks like toxic players will get weeded out. Wish League did this now.

And hackusations will increase. Great. I can't wait to be falsely accused.

Hey, smaller countries like mine does requires ID to buy sim card. Beside USA, where freedom according to law always changes, most small countries will required government issued ID to get sim card. Although its not a problem to getting multiple sim cards, even from the same telco. Besides, its the small countries like us that you can find phone with 3 or 4 sim card slot, and they're cheap as well, and all the sims work at the same time. Although that means 4 times faster battery drain and 4 times the radiation, but hey, if you only need it for authentication, it works just fine.

This is really stupid, and I personally expected way better from Valve.

I know it might sound crazy to some who take a hit from their phones every thirty seconds, but I personally know a couple people who literally do not own cellphones.

Cuz Wechat being the most Popular/powerful chat client of the Chinese NSA, REQUIRES Location access privilege, because freaking, they can do it and they 're holding your friends hostage..

Steam is doing the exact same thing..

Several people I know who have been hacked were able to retrieve their accounts through their phone numbers so this is useful.

It would be so futuristic though.. Imagine you are going to fire up Battlefield 5.5 through Origin and you have to show your fingerprints on a scanner and Origins says.. " Good Morning Mr xxxxxxx " and imagine later it says "Have a nice day sir".... AND you can customize the voice as well... Imagine paying 4.99 so that Morgan Freeman voices Origin for you....

I'd pay to listen to Jennifer Lawrence.

It still shouldn't be this way.

Steam's built-in browser is like a 3-year-old build of Chromium IIRC, and features like the music player haven't been updated since their introduction. Winamp of all things is more feature-packed, easier to use, and lighter-weight. I don't think they're capable of doing anything beyond an automated check with phone numbers.

Also it's somewhat concerning that Valve's platform is so rampant with cheaters and knife thieves that they need these security features in the first place.

Indeed, lots of hackers around on Steam.

You only need your passport or ID if you buy from an official shop, however any little shop will give you a SIM card without caring and they'll register some random name and ID (maybe even their own).

Thanks for clarifying, had a feeling there was a bit of context left out.
