NZXT Kraken X52 - Loose Backplate

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help me out with my new Kraken x52. Just in the process of installing it (for my 7700k). I've made sure that I've used the correct Intel standoffs with my ASUS ROG STRIX Z270G mobo, but the plate still seems quite loose. A quick search online reveals that lots of other users are apparently having the same issue. Some report that tightening the standoffs down with an adjustable spanner does the trick, whilst others say that the 'looseness' is normal and just to go ahead and fit the pump with the 4 thumbscrews. Others, still, say that over tightening the standoffs has broken the standoffs/plate etc.

I'm confused as to what I'm supposed to do in order to fit this safely without breaking anything and whilst ensuring full contact between the pump/cooler and my CPU. If any of you good folks have had an experience fitting one and could share your tips, that would absolutely fantastic?

Thanks ever so much, guys

Use washers if you think it's lose for some reason.

I'm using a x62 and a 7600k

I've tightened the thumbscrews with my hands
tight n strong

but no tools
gotta be careful with those
it really is easy to over do it with tools on things that are supposed to be closed with fingers

I had no further troubles

btw I have no idea if it is a delidded chip

but if temps seem high it's most likely not the cooler
using the cam software should show water temps

Cheers guys! I really don't want to do anything other than finger tighten the standoffs. Good idea with the washers - exactly where should I place these? Back of mobo, so the threaded lugs aren't poking through the other side as much?

Cheers dudes

This sub-reddit describes other folks with the same issue and having to resort to using pliers etc to tighten the standoffs - it genuinely does seem like the standoffs don't screw in far enough and that's why the CPU block is not actually mating with the processor, leading to extremely high temperatures:

Back of the backplate. If metal make sure they are touching the backplate and nothing else.

the back for sure

though I'd buy something not out of metal
and even then making sure it doesn't actually squeeze anything

though the area seems suitably empty of anything sticking out

I can't really remember on my board if there were any traces on th back that would be in the way

but the front has quite many

so something out of plastic or so biggrin.gif

Hi mate,

I can see from the pic that you, too, have a 'gap' between the bottom of the standoffs and the motherboard surface.... does this mean yours is also loose?

Cheers

yeah you're right
however

it sits on the IHS quite well
and temps are great

the cooler must receive it's force from the backplate, and not "sit" on the board

off the top of my head

there are "sticks" coming from the backplate through the holes

if you need more distance to mount it

well you need to put plastic washers under the board, between the back of the board and the backplate of the cooler
