Thunderbolt 2 & Thunderbolt 3 Cables

Hi,

What is the difference between a Thunderbolt 2 cable to a Thunderbolt 3 cable?

I've got my head around most of thunderbolt 2 vs 3

20 Gb/s vs 40 Gb/s

USB-C connector that is the same shape as the thunderbolt 3 attachment at the end of the cable.

I ask because I've got TH2 and TH3 cards - I've got some TH2 cables

Is it possible to use TH2 cables with TH3 card [with an adapter]

It's important to know so I get this right - It would help if TH2 would work on TH3

Just a little confusion remaining but understand most of it - thanks

Yes you can use an adapter. I had one that I used with an audio interface (TB3 on my PC, TB2 on interface).

I tried two and preferred this one: StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

So you've got a UAD / or similar - SNAP ! - Among others.

TH2 & TH3 Asus EX II but I've looked for others but can't find them

Apple TH3 [USB-C] to TH2 adapter is £49 on their website - I've found some Apple ones for £29 - Can't say their cheap but a lot better than £49

I've seen a Startech adapter

Lets be honest, this is way too much in price just to connect things together

There is rumor / speculation that Apple will utilize the the USB-C connector for their next generation of Macs for thunderbolt 3 - Currently they use the mini-display port connector type for TH2

UAD do the same as do Focusrite - use the mini-display port connector for TH2 - Depending on your hardware say UAD - If you have Apollo 8 BF with TH2 connector - then 5+ years later add a next generation Apollo 16 with a new revised USB-C design - there is a need for an adapter to mingle / inter-populate the UAD racks - Annoying if you don't have the adapters !!! -

How much longer will the TH2 cables be made for? - It can be very annoying if there is a mis-calculation in what is needed for connections of equipments etc.... where you don't have "x" adapter when hooking together

Thunderbolt 2 vs Thunderbolt 3 = 20 Gb/s vs 40 Gb/s - Is there any limiting factor within the thunderbolt 2 cables? - So if a TH2 cable was used with a TH3 card and an adapter would there still be 40 Gb/s as per TH3?

Reason asking is knowing if there is a limitation of the adapter type used

TH2 = mini display port connection
TH3= USB-C connection

Thanks
