Today, AMD announced the world’s first dual-GPU graphics card for professionals, the Radeon Pro Duo, designed to deliver outstanding performance and flexibility in today's most complex multi-tasking workflows.

Today AMD(NASDAQ: AMD) announced the world’s first dual-GPU graphics card designed for professionals: the Polaris-architecture-based Radeon™Pro Duo. Built on the capabilities of the Radeon™Pro WX 7100, the Radeon ProDuoprofessional graphics cardis designed to excel at media and entertainment, broadcast, and design and manufacturing workflows, delivering outstanding performance and superior flexibility that today’s creative professionals demand.

The Radeon Pro Duo is equipped with 32GB of ultra-fast GDDR5 memory to handle larger data sets, more intricate 3D models, higher resolution videos, and complex assemblies with ease. Operatingat a max power of 250W, the Radeon Pro Duo harnesses a total of 72 compute units (4608 stream processors) for a combined performance of up to 11.45 TFLOPS of single-precision compute performance on one board, and twice the geometry throughput of the Radeon™ Pro WX 7100.2The Radeon Pro Duo enables professionals to work up to four 4K monitors at 60Hz, drive the latest 8K single monitor display at30Hz using a single cable, or drive an 8K display at 60Hz using a dual cable solution.

I smell a dual polaris gaming card coming.

Obviously because it's blue in color ....

Seriously , it's probably clocked at 1100mhz or something like that

Wonder how it will do in gamming?

It's likely that we will see a dual Polaris solution for gaming as the OP says.

Should you buy it? No. A single powerful card is always better. Get Vega or a 1080Ti instead. No need to worry about how well games support Crossfire or microstuttering issues or other problems associated with Crossfire.

This is a good reason not to:

Binning and the boost clock.

The MXM variants could do the same clocks as the RX 480 with the same 1.12GHz and 1.26GHz boost.

While the base clock might be the same on the laptop variants, I imagine it rarely boosts on laptop. Plus the laptop parts are binned. Professional cards would be even more stringently binned and although the peak clock of 1243 MHz is the same as the RX 480, is heavily binned so it will use less power at the same clocks.

So it's not too abnormal to consider that it uses less power. The RX 580 uses more power because it is way past the optimal efficiency clocks - it has reached the point where it is pre-overclocked, much more power (30% more) for only 8% or so more performance. Keep in mind this PCB has 2 GPUs at the same clocks as the RX 480 which is closer to optimal efficiency levels.

Does the Pro Duo use a different set of drivers? Is there some performance metric on these cards that are not unlocked on a gaming variant? I.e. singe/double precision performance

Or is it simply just two RX 480 dies on a single board, marketed for professionals with a ridiculous price tag? ($999 USD)

Workstation drivers, as usual. Those can (and will) multiply performance in certain applications. Polaris has low ratio of SP:DP to begin with, so the theoretical numbers should stay the same for two Polaris cards at 1242 MHz. It does have 16 GB of memory per GPU, as well.

In an effort to combat plagiarism, can I ask Mr. OP here to swap the link for this? https://www.amd.com/en-us/press-releases/Pages/the-new-radeon-2017apr24.aspx

Hilbert didn't write that article at all. None of that is his content beyond what appears to be a purely speculative table based on existing RX 480/580 specs. It's as blatant as plagiarism can get by any standard of journalism.
