7700k temps 85-100, what else to check?

i7 7700k
MSI 270 A-Pro (bios updated to 1.2)
2x Gskill 8 gb ripjaw V 3200 ram
Deepcool Captain 360mm CPU cooler with 5 Enermax Twisted Pressure 120mm fans

Ambient Temp is around 21-22 C.

Just for baseline, I've ran OCCT, Prime95, Realbench, and AIDA64.

With no overclocking (4.2), and the all default bios setting, this thing already hits 75-85 C under full load . Was able to lower that to around 64-74 by lowering VCORE down to 1.165 which was stable as indicated by 7-10 hours of stress testing various tests. Idle is around 30 C give or take a few.

As I slowly increased the multiplier, I had to up to VCORE or I got instability. I Only made it to 4.6, which was requiring about 1.22 to run stable. At that speed, it's peaking between 87-98 C under full load. OCCT won't run for more than 30 seconds without stopping due to temps. AIDA64 throttles cpu between 4-8 percent when it heats up too much.

At 4.6 I'm seeing temps about 72-82 when gaming. System runs stable under gaming loads, but I won't run stress tests for long because of the 85+ temps.

AVX offset is on -2
Clock speed is set to override
Voltage is set to override
RAM is running at 3200, no XMP

Opening up the case makes no difference, I don't think it's ambient temp, or air flow that is the problem.

I'm not sure what to do next? Did I just get a potato? Could the system even run stable if the pump in the water cooler wasn't working well, or maintain 30C idle?

Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't want to De-lid. I'm pretty bummed because I thought I would be able to get to at least 4.8. with reasonable temps given the massive 360mm radiator and 5 fans!

Do you have a different cooler to test with, or try reseating the cooler with new thermal paste?

Chances are the issue is between the die and the heat spreader... what is the differential temps between cores?
well you obviously already know the answer

aside from a delid

RMA it and get another one

some 7700k's seem to have more thermal headroom than others
this could be simply the amount of glue Intel uses
as it most likely varies with manufacturing tolerances

you could try to acquire one that comes delidded, or sent your CPU to someone who does the delid

Don't bother delidding. Just send it back in case there is something more wrong with it

Hello

Check System agent & IO & PLL voltage and report back.... many 7700k overheat duo to motherboard overvolt those for no reason..

also some 7700k has very bad thermal paste from intel... some just fine thumb.gif

Thanks for suggestions.

Had to order thermal paste online, so I'll have that to try tomorrow.

I ran test tonight with no overclocking and core voltage at 1.17, and still hits 80-90 degrees on OCCT. I did not notice large temp differences in different cores. The test quits after 88 degrees. Only made it 4m26s.

1.32 and 1.36 is high for vccio and vccsa (io and system agent voltage)... lower them to 1.2v-1.25v for 3200mhz memory speed.

With a hot cpu, lowering any voltage that is too high will help.

Lowered SA and IO voltage to 1.2 on override.

Seemed to help peak. I wasn't spiking up to 90, but it is still staying in 70-80 under load.

Step 1: Thermal paste will be here today. Going to clean it off good re-apply paste. Repeat Tests.

Step 2: I will call the company who made the computer. I will insist the chip keeps resetting during gaming. I swapped it with another cpu, worked fine. Put it back in, crashing again. Hopefully they will allow me to swap out just the processor because postage on a 40 lb computer across the country will not be cheap.

Step 3: If that doesn't work, I guess I lost bad in the cpu lottery, and I'll just keep my upstairs at 10 C.

Cleaned off the existing thermal paste, prepped with thermal surface purifier, and applied Arctic Silver. It did help a little, not much.

Shaved about 5 C off the peaks. Also the data hover between 70-75, whereas previous graph was more 75-80. The OCCT stress test ran for 20 minutes, usually it was cutting off the test right around 4 min.

I guess my chip is just a lousy one that generates a lot of heat.
Don't trust OCCT temp readings. There's a setting to have it abort if a certain temp is reached, and since OCCT records non-existent temp spikes, turn the auto-abort off.

Arctic Silver is not your best TIM. Get something better.

Your idle temp is good for that chip. Consider more aggressive pump and fan curves.

Is there a large difference in temps amongst cores while testing? >10C between coolest and warmest cores is outside Intel specs and can cause instability.

The 7700 is a hot chip. Some are hotter than others, but they're all hot. Consider a delid or an i7-6700k.
