Can someone give me any suggestions why my GPU is throttling?

I don't know why my GPU is throttling now. I haven't done much. It does it in all my games. The throttle happens when the game renders everything i'm about to see . U know how like you close a door and some advanced games minimize rendering behind those close doors, then you open the door and it renders everything in the room.

Ok I lied, I've been trying to fix this problem so I did a lot of things to my PC before I started noticing this. i was literally trying to fix my instability issue, but I'm starting to narrow it down to gpu, psu, or mobo. Could an underperforming ssd cause this? My ssd right now is only writing at half speed. I'm about to try and hopefully fix that by doing a "secure erase" and then reinstalling the OS on it.

P.S. My gfx card is a Sapphire Nitro R9 390 and it's at constant 70 degrees under load.

never heard of gpu bios. yes to all except

I don't have the retail box of my gpu. How can i tell if its teh 1040/1500 one or the 1010/1500 one?

Why would i need this if I didn't have any problems with the gpu before? ppl are saying to not flash any bios unless you know for a fact there is a hardware problem with that pc component.

Is that a game ? Because that can easily be a problem with of the game and not the hardware. Try with Unigine Engine Valley Extreme HD and submit a new MSI AF report, this benchmark only stress GPU, the CPU usage is minimum.
Also upload info about your setup

Yes ! this benchmark is almost a "isolate" test, because stress mostly the GPU. If the benchmark show a stable performance after the gpu reach his maximum temperature, the gpu isn't the problem. Check the GPU temps because is really heavy !

Take a look at the graph below. The opposite just happened. LOL what the hell is going on? That to me indicates something is unstable. Maybe the power being supplied from the wall outlet? Or maybe the gpu memory is slowly dying? idk

Is that Unigine Valley ?

I'm not a AMD GPU user since last year, but i heard problems with the new Wattman and some GPUs, so you can try a clean driver reinstall with DDU

Ok I ran it several times (and i didn't count). What is very odd is that the stutters happened every 5-20 seconds. Mostly between 10-20 seconds, but this was on the first run. Every time the benchmark restarted the loop the stutters became less frequent. The green arrows indicate the last loop I ran and no stutters at all.

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but my outlet is known to give unstable supply of power sometimes. The outlet is actually loose on the wall. I just want to include that as a possible factor to my issue, just in case we don't find the problem.

p.s. that benchmark is like 4 years old. It was like playing an old game. I turned up my fans for nothing, lol. No offense

LOL is not that old, but is more reliable than a game and stress really well. Mmmm graph looks okey !
If your power socket is wrong try installing the computer on another place. Also a clean driver install with DDU is a good way to discard software problems

Thanks for the fast replies. For a clean install of the AMD display drivers I did the uninstall manually by following the sticky in this forum. Right here: http://www.overclock.net/t/988215/how-to-remove-your-amd-gpu-drivers-new-2016/0_100

I'm gonna do a secure wipe of my ssd. Reinstall a windows OS. probably go back to windows 8.1

Edit: i'll report back soon

>check your drive with crystaldiskinfo
>check system latency
>check system temps with hwinfo64
Also if you reinstall the OS , first try testing the system with bare minimum software just drivers and a game/benchmark.

Your usage characteristics isn't abnormal for a hawaii GPU. Those things had sort of a wierd controller that didn't work well with MSI ab.

Check this out. Nothing is wrong with the card. I had a 290 that did the same thing.

Thanks for the help guys. I got it fixed after I did a "secure erase" on my Samsung SSD 830. I guess it was software related. I think my 830 is going bad too. Write speeds are at half speed according to the benchmarks. Read speeds are perfectly fine.

Edit: nevermind. the issue might be my SSD. It is very likely. I should replace it before I lose important data when the ssd fails in the future. But 99% of the stutters are gone. I'm reading that my SSD might be failing now. It's power on hours is over 4 years lol.

Glad to hear you "fixed" the problem
How many TB have written the SSD ?

You have the Samsung Magician ? Also the GSmartControl can read well the SMART from SSDs. Is free and opensource

EDIT:
I never had a 830, but some old ssd doesn't have a good garbage collection algorithm and lose performance over time, a "secure erase" can restore the performance

I've been wanting to get a new drive. Is there any significant performance boost with the m.2 ssd?

Also can I get the install of the samsung magician you have? I have the latest one (version 5.0) that has some of the features removed.

I miss the old version

Mine just get updated with the new interface, looks cool but yes lacks some features. i prefer using GSMARTCONTROL or Crystal Disk Info
