The Log to My First Sound System

It’s time to slowly and carefully enter the audio world of the big boys. I am done with getting all in one speakers with substandard parts included. I have had the 2.1 from Klipsh, Kanto YU3 and YU4’s, and a slew of different setups from Logitech. None had the range, power, or there was white noise present. I want to take the quality of my sound into my own hands and stop spending so much money on not even entry level setups.

After a lot of endless nights of research, debating back and forth, and conspiring with a few dozen people, I think I came up with a good starting setup.

AMP: Asgard 2 http://schiit.com/products/asgard-2

DAC: Modi 2 Uber http://schiit.com/products/modi-2

Speakers: Airmotiv 5s https://emotiva.com/products/powered-monitors/speakers/airmotiv-5s

Cables: Pyst http://schiit.com/products/pyst-cables

RCA Cable: These things http://ursine.audio/ (Customized to black and blue)

So as you can see, there are things from four different places there. I am getting pieces of the setup bit by bit and today I got the first shipment in!

Here is my DAC and AMP. Problem is that I originally ordered the Magni 2 Uber with the Modi 2 Uber. I already had the RMA setup to return it because I ordered the Asgard 2 a few days later.

This is my Modi 2 Uber.

Notice anything wrong here? Only one speaker? That's because they only shipped one! I immediately called and they admitted to the mistake and are shipping another out today. Whoops!

That's all I have right now but I will post again when I have something more to show.

Are you going to be running headphones, I didn't see mention of them and as the Emotivas are active speakers you don't need the Magni/Asgard.

I will be sometimes. But I got the Asgard 2 for volume control mostly. Airmotiv 5s don't have front facing volume control like the previous gen Airmotiv 5 and the back volume control is a pain to use. I will turn down the speakers and use the Asgard 2 for volume mostly.

Or if you prefer keeping the Schiit product route, I would recommend using the Modi 2 Uber as your USB DAC and the SYS for volume control and input selection:

http://schiit.com/products/sys

The combo might be what you are looking for since you don't need amplification with your speakers.

I needed the AMP for my headphones too!
the focusrite scarlett solo is a 24/192 adc/dac recording interface which i use. You may not need the microphone and guitar inputs, but it has a handy volume knob and built in headphone amp, along with stereo rca analog outputs. It, sadly, lacks toslink, but if you are using it for dac...

and they also advertise it as having the lowest latency usb 2.0 drivers.

Almost done!

Look what came in the mail today!

The small box contained a "we're sorry present" from them for not shipping my speakers together.

Here it all is before hooking it up.

I first setup the Modi 2 Uber and the Asgard 2.

Whoops! Someone made a mistake here. They sent me the wrong wires for my setup...

I had to quick run and get one of these bad boys with the full intent of returning them on Monday when my custom cables come from Ursine.

I will wait to show anymore pictures until the setup is completely here. I currently have cables going every which way and it is not clean at all.
