Success! Against all odds, including severe user inexperience, new Ryzen 5 1600 machine boots on first try.

I really can't believe this worked. New chip, mobo, RAM, and the fact I have basically zero experience with any PC building other than minor upgrades before this. All I did was swap over my SSD with Windows 10 from my old machine, which was 8 years old with an Intel chipset, plugged it all in plus a recently acquired used GPU and......time passes.....time passes.....message pops up saying "gathering hardware information" or something like that.....and it totally booted to my old home screen like I wasn't using completely new hardware with completely different architecture. I had practically tried it just for ****s and grins and was shocked it worked at all, let alone so easily. I updated BIOS and drivers, OC'd to 3.6GHz, played with the fan curves, and it's all running great - 65fps Witcher 3 Ultra settings 1440p, 1250 Cinebench multicore, better than average overall benchmark at userbenchmark.com. Minor annoyances are my 3200 RAM maxes out at 2666 (somewhat expected) and cold boot time is 45 seconds compared to my old machine's 15 seconds (unexpected), but I can't really complain so far given how lazy I went about this. The same photo export that used to take 15 minutes was done in 3:30 at stock clock speed. I couldn't be happier with the decision to go with this Ryzen CPU.

I will do a clean install soon just on principal and maybe that will solve the long boot times, but I had to share. Maybe it's normal with Windows 10 but either way it's a testament to how robust Microsoft has made their OS that this would work so well with zero tweaking and just swapping over the OS drive to the new machine. Maybe Ryzen had something to do with it, too, anticipating idiots like me swapping drives with no effort to do clean installs. WHATEVS

I'll be back soon with stupid questions you can answer in your sleep about RAM timings and various voltages, but for now I'm pumped. Go AMD and Ryzen!

I've read about boot time issues with this motherboard too, MSI B350 Tomahawk. Fingers crossed it all gets better. This is basically back to Vista boot times.

Well, then. Sitting with a shiny new install of Windows after BSODs started setting in a couple days ago. It got to the point where I couldn't even get past BIOS. Went even as far as using a jumper to undue all my amateur hour nonsense so I could start from absolute square uno, minus the BIOS version update. Hell, maybe I should roll that back too. Back to lurking here and learning more before I go messing.

Now I just hope I have some valid save files and image catalogs in my backups...THIS IS FINE lol

Gigabyte isn't slow though. Quite fast I would say. Depends on the manufacturer and their BIOS optimizations I guess. thumb.gif

PS: I did the same with my Win 10 install, just moved the drive over from my old build and booted up.
Just needed to reactivate my Windows install.

I like fresh installs myself just solves the gremlins that maybe lurking around.

I updated my BIOS on my crosshair and the POST time has shaved off by a 4-5 secs. May monitor used to go to sleep if i saved and restarted after a BIOS change then would wake up before i get to see the splash screen, now the monitor doesnt have time to go to sleep. BIOS time in task manager went from 19 to 14 so it's definitely getting faster.

13.2 sec! Just found out about that feature! And I haven't enabled or tested the bios fast-boot yet.

Are you guys on Legacy BIOS or UEFI? I struggle to find help on this and only knew it was a thing after I installed Windows and a few apps. Obviously.
