In his TED Talk on Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company's semitruck would be able to outperform diesel trucks on the road.

Musk, who revealed a teaser image of the electric truck for the first time, said he had taken a prototype for a spin in Tesla's parking lot.

"This will be a very spry truck," he said. "You can drive this around like a sports car."

The company is expected to reveal the electric semitruck in September. Tesla is also building an electric pickup truck, which it plans to unveil in a year and a half to two years.

Tesla is diving into the trucking industry.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday said the company would unveil a semitruck in September and a pickup truck in 18 to 24 months.

"Tesla Semi truck unveil set for September," Musk wrote on Twitter. "Team has done an amazing job. Seriously next level."

They won't sell. Talk to any semi truck drivers. They hate the modern technology, and especially emissions equipment. They won't touch this with a 10 foot barge pole. Also, a short range is not exactly great for a semi.

Perhaps independent truckers will hate and refuse to buy them but if economical to operate for short haul, fleet operators may well scarf them up.

Classifying an electric semi as "emissions equipment" is a bit premature. They could feasibly outperform diesel; electric often does. The semi driver you spoke with might not be aware of just how much torque electric motors can generate; and torque is the name of the game when you're talking trucks.

Electric vehicles are also much more versatile in terms of form factor. A lower centre of mass can be achieved with greater ease -- crucial in this vehicle segment where stability and control are significantly sidelined due to the need for raw power. More torque means less complex gearing, no more gigantic complicated turbo's.. The list goes on. This IS an interesting move for the industry, whether crusty old drivers know that or not.

At the end of the day, semi truck drivers complaints will be immaterial anyway. The superior truck will win economically, whichever truck that happens to be. If Tesla designs a more cost effective semi, there will be drivers for them. And if not, autonomous semi's aren't far off anyway.

Just like the cars couldn't be done smile.gif

Nothing tried nothing done.

These will easily carry 4x the battery of a model x making 1000 miles a breeze for short hauls.

Can these electric trucks last a million miles or more?

Can they travel several thousand miles without stopping?

Are they easily worked on by the operator?

I see your arguments but they dont readily apply to the trucking and automotive/industrial industry

Why would an operator needs to work on it? Low maintenance like electric cars.

The business model is rental for short hauls.

Anything else?
