Average people don't drive semis. Argument does not apply. Range is everything in semis. Day truckers drive close to home but drive all day, and will go hundreds of miles in one shift. To have a battery that would last all day would be very heavy, further reducing range, etc. In a car, the aerodynamics draw far more fuel than the weight. But in a truck that weights 10-20 times that of a car, accelerating from stoplights takes a huge quantity of power. The size of battery in a delivery truck to last all day would make a uselessly small payload.

I'm not even going to begin on long haul truckers.

I challenge anyone who thinks this is the next sliced bread to watch any videos from truckers/people who use trucks on daily baseis (loggers, etc) online and look at the challenges they face on a daily basis. Not to mention all these concepts always have stupid plastic bodies that truckers don't want.

100%. Hauling heavy loads in a semi is in no way comparable to an average car so simply putting in 4x the amount of batteries does not mean you get 4x the range of the smaller vehicle. Range is very important in regular cars but it is absolutely critical for hauling cargo. I'm very interested to see how Musk plans to tackle this hurdle with semi trucks considering that their cars are barely adequate in terms of range already. Is the whole thing going to be made of batteries?

8 hours of driving is about 400 miles depending on traffic conditions which gives plenty of opportunity to swap batteries like this - which is a pretty novel idea. Hook up with all the Pilots and TAs to have battery stations.

I imagine all these big vehicles will have to be sold with only fast charging option seeing as a car takes 8hrs or more to charge with normal charging option...

Not a complicated issue.

That's not my point. My point is that the energy required to haul a massive weight like that of a loaded down semi is exponentially more than that of a small car, and that massive energy requirement will destroy range. I'm not saying EV motors can't do it, but the energy requirements of the batteries will be much, much higher than that of a small car, meaning less range. Let's not forget the huge amount of time it still takes an EV to recharge (even with fast charging). Now imagine how long it would take to recharge a battery pack 10x-20x larger?

The crazy torque would be a huge plus for all the heavy haulers who end up crawling up any sort of hill with ICE trucks. I just highly doubt they could pack enough batteries on a truck to have any sort of practical range. Maby the big companies that just do daytripping from hub to hub could handle it. Have charge stations at the load/unload points and just have the truck plugged in and charging any time it's sitting idle.

A cool use would be those huge wide/heavy load deals with push and pull trucks. Have the pull truck an ICE truck, and the push truck an EV. On flat and level terrain let the ICE truck handle the load while the EV truck charges with those regenerative brake thingies, and then on hills where they normally end up slowing to a crawl have the EV with it's massive torque burn it up the hill and then once they're back on the level it could go back to charging. It would still be there for control and braking during the strait and level areas but the ICE truck could probably handle the maintaining speed there without it.

I can't read the full articles because of Adblock, but what I could read is just Musk doing a sales pitch, not an independent review of what these vehicles can actually do in the real world. No different IMO than when AMD promised us an "OCers dream" a couple of years ago.

Isn't a ICE truck 10x heavier than a car?

having 10x bigger gas tanks on ICE trucks offer much more milage.

How are the physics somehow different for EVs? confused.gif

By your logic the Tesla model S with smaller battery should be getting more range because it is lighter.

I am really not following these fail arguments....

A model S with 100kw battery gets 539km range. A model X with the same 100kw battery gets 475kw.

Model X is 6000 pounds.

So a ICE semi truck without load averages 17000 to 22000 pounds. with the engine being the bulk of the weight.

An EV semi with the battery being the bulk of the weight is some how worse?

Really not following the fail arguments.

Well, you just answered my question. Obviously, you did not read any of the articles linked in this thread and apparently you didn't thoroughly read all the posts here, either. But, then again, maybe you did and you just like to be contrary (actually, you admitted to that awhile back).

I have ad block and I was able to read the articles (there is a second link that leads to several more articles, btw).
