True, it's not passively cooled. The 300 TDP is for a dual GPU card though. The MI25, as its name suggests, is capable of 25TF of float calculations and we know Vega is capable of ~12.5TF. If you consider the 6600W power supply the server has each, GPU can't get more than 205W even if all power was dedicated to the GPUs, which isn't the case obviously since there are other components that need power.

1080 level of performance for 1070 price is a win for AMD. If they however plan to sell it for 1080 price then it is indeed a bust.
All the cards at the very top end are for very very limited market, Titan/Ti and the like. It's way better if AMD launches a way cheaper but competitive chip that more people can afford, right now AMD only has the low end and start of mainstream in performance.

The GTX 1070/1080 ship have sailed a long time ago.

This is AMD launching a card in to a saturated market where people are looking toward Volta like improvements before buying anything more. By that I mean vastly better TDP, performance and price/performance.

If Vega ends up being 120W or lower, cost $300, then gamers will get it if it match GTX 1080. If not, its AMD being late and not changing a damn thing.

What if it was better than a 1070 close within 5% in beating a 1080 but at a cheap price?

If the 8gb versions is $500 or under, and the 4 gb is $400 and under. Then you have a lineup that does disrupt. Especially when you look at their driver optimizations.

Fiji still competes at quite a few titles with the 1070-loses more than it wins but it does compete. If AMD offers just a 1070/1080 competitor then it forsakes most fiji owners plus the high end part of GPU market that looks into 1080Ti+ performance and just waits for AMD to make their offer before buying. While it will not be the absolute end of the world for radeon, such a move would mean nvidia will be left unchecked in the halo segment for 2 years, solidifying people's perception as the top brand. People on a budget will keep admiring titans and move on to buy the xx60s and xx70s, thinking they receive some of that titan stardust, ignoring that competing radeons may actually be faster.

AMD needs a GP102 competitor, yesterday.

How would an 8gb card that's 5% slower than the GTX 1080 and costs $500, disrupt the market....when the GTX 1080 is already out, already 8gb, and can already be had for under $500

Go look up how many people buy cards greater than $500 people that the Titan xp and Ti are targeted at do not make up a lot of the population according to steam stats.
There's a big reason the 1060, RX series sell so well, and that's value to people on tight budgets which is a majority to the population than a subset of elite gaming RIGS that make up less than 1% in PC gaming.
The builds you see being done with 1080 are smaller compared to the people buying GTX 1060,1070 and RX 480.
AMD gained market share on the RX 480 by itself, and that's because of price/performance. And also because 60-70% of gamer's according to steam run their games at 1080p or below.

Because of driver optimization and better performance in dx 12. The fiji card's even show they had legs when drivers were optimized. And this is more than likely not running on final drivers and if more than likely a reference card by looks of the clocks.

This will be within a 1080 but at a cheaper price there will be different models. But the big disrupt will be the performance of the 4gb at $350+.

I agree if this thing is over $500 it better nutt up or shut up on performance because it will make them look silly.
