[KitGuru] AMD Radeon RX Vega caught hiding in plain sight - Page 25

That bench results smells...

Having zero ipc gain is not entirely unbelievable. Vega will be using NCU and not GCN which is heavily reworked for higher clocks, among other things. AMD might favor a design that keeps the same performance per core if it would let them extract 40-50% higher clocks. It is just that this card, whatever it is, is clocked miserably low for such a scenario.

It might not be as sexy as the glory days of buying flagship cards for $500 that would last 3-4 years, but it still sure as heck beats Nvidia's current proposal of buying high end (but not flagship) cards for $750 every 2 years.

Of course, proper competition across all tiers would still be ideal.

You are right, this is were it is at. Wonder if I can freesync my gsync?

Most aren't going to care enough about it to let it be the overriding principle in their purchasing decision.
I agree, but I don't want to hear anymore about Vega's release date moving further away. mad.gif We are so close to the end of May, the end of June sounds terrible.

It also has an effect on people's perceptions if Vega is not up to scratch. It'll develop a rep and not a good one if it keeps throwing barbs but without the performance to back it up. See Oc's dream, DOAlaris, Rebrandeon etc.

Hyping is fine, but at the end of the day, it better do as advertised and not come up short against the product it is competing with. It'll just make the company look like fools.

If it's targeted at Volta with the Poor Volta ad it better well be in Volta ballpark territory .

That slide says "up to... approximately". Clearly that's the target they are shooting for, but it seems pretty unlikely they had a fully qualified 1500 MHz card back in December when those slides were released. If they did, why do they not list any specs for it like they did for the other cards announced at that time?

There are no spec sheets for the card or server, and marketing has a history of being pretty loose with specifics (kind of how Polaris offers up to 2.7x the perf/watt). Plus the argument that the early Doom results don't matter because it was an early sample that wasn't at final clocks kind of falls down if they have 1500 MHz cards back in December. Maybe they'll get there, but maybe it's also with a card that's pushed well past its efficiency curve and the consumer cards will weigh in slower also. Using that one slide as "proof", as some people seem to be, that consumer Vega will hit 1500 MHz seems unwise.

AMD would bleed even more money if they wasted 2+ years of development time on basically porting Fiji to "14nm" for higher clocks. It'd be silly to not take advantage of all the improvements Polaris provided over the Hawaii generation of GCN; clock for clock even those improvements alone would make it at least 10% faster than Fiji. The benchmark is fake, or this is potentially the smaller Vega part with a core configuration below 4096shaders/64rops.

I do not disagree. This is either fake or a smaller downclocked vega.

This is what I would expect from a big vega, although it is probably fake too. Around 9700-9800 is probably what Titan Xp scores at stock as well. Quite the coincidence.

And I'm here, downgraded from 1070, to 1060, to 290X.

Waiting for Vega myself now, not going for NVidia again.

1060 to 290x is more of a side-grade anyway really. Not much between them

Also waiting on Vega here

The smaller part would have to enter the market starting around $300 to be well accepted if there's any truth in the benchmarks in that link. Three or more Vega based cards would actually be a nice line-up considering AMD currently has nothing to compete with the 1070, 1080, 1080ti and Titan Xp.

The lack of leaks is both enticing and frustrating at this point, I feel pretty wasteful having a Freesync monitor and a 1070 redface.gif

Maybe this card is a RX 590/ Vega R9 Nano-Like ?

THat put it slighly faster than 1070 but slower thsn 1080 like this chart

TPUS uses that benchmark to compare with the other cards?
