We had to wait about that long before Hawaii started to trounce 780Ti, so yes.

Right on.

There you go putting words in my mouth again. You're deliberately miswording my posts right on. But i expect no less from you since you're defending AMD to the hilt.

Unless Vega competes with Volta, given AMD's marketing ad mocking Volta , Vega is a fail if it does not back it up with performance.

Just trying to cut through all the hyperbole, which this site bleeds around every AMD launch. Let's be clear-- one ad isn't going to sink Vega, only bad pricing combined with mediocre performance will do that. The ad was misguided, sure, but it was a wink and a nod they thought no one would catch. Which was stupid on their part.

And no, I'm not defending AMD, Fiji sucked in both performance and market position, IMO. But I have very little patience for hyperbolic statements like something is already a complete and utter failure if it doesn't compete with a next-generation part that isn't even specced out yet.

I'm trying to defend logic and a reasonable approach to a completely unknown product.

Hyperbolic statements? Nope that is further from the truth. AMD fired the shot first and called out a product that wasnr completely specced yet and was targeting with the ad. If it doesnt compete with the targeted product then it can be taken as a failure. That is reasonable. It's just like Ronda Rousey calling out Holm before a UFC match and getting battered in the actual match. That was a fail on her part and If Volta does the same then Vega is a failure. Its hardly a wink or nod. Given Volta is a huge successor to Pascal I hardly doubt that was the case.

That statement doesn't really ring true.

At 980 release, 10 months after 290x and 780 Ti release, the 290x had not caught up. Source.

In fact, at 390x release a year and a half later, the 290x still hadn't fully caught up but it had closed the gap a lot. Source.

People often complain about rebrands but owners of the 290x were given a huge bonus when the 390x revision came along.

It took about 2 years for 290x to catch and surpass the 780 Ti at all resolutions.

The Fury X will be two years old next month and it hasn't done as well against the 980 Ti as the 290x did vs the 780 Ti 2 years in.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. It looks like the 780Ti launch spread from 290x is about the same as it was 10 months in.

So what you're really saying is that Vega might look pretty good against the 1080Ti in 2019? thumb.gif

I'll see myself out. biggrin.gif

Nv owned themselves since Volta is already 2 years late. thumb.gif 'Poor Volta' seems appropriate in the correct context.

Yeah, nVidia is on the bringe of bankrupcy and don't have anything that can counter AMD's high end offerings.

Sad!

How do you come to this number? Rumours right now range from Volta releases between Q3/2017 at the earliest to Q1/2018 at most. AMD's Vega will likely come late June 2017 and then take several weeks or even months to be available. Would you like to buy a brand new graphics card when a better model is that close in? I mean, AMD fans are used to wait literally forever. What are a few more to come? wink.gif

Don't mind his comment. Some guys just live off by putting words into other people's posts or completely switch the meaning to their liking. It's getting tiresome, but not all of them are doing it on purpose. The ad was another failure by AMD telling "we are better, but not yet ... maybe later". A little more realsim would work wonders in their marketing. For a company that hasn't brought in any profits in years, this is quite the statement.

The ad had nothing to do with early Volta information. It's just the usual bad marketing AMD always has. What irks me is the low level quality these ads have since a few years. Punching down is never a good attitude. Especially if you are a 2nd at best company like AMD. Leaves such a bad taste in the mouth. If either Intel or Nvidia did the same, hell would spoil over in contrast.

At least Nvidai brought something with Pascal in between. AMD on the other hand seems to leave the spot completely open like how their high-end is missing since felt ages. The context is only so far AMD is overstating again and will get another round of beatings. Not that it hasn't happened against both Intel and Nvidia, some would think they learn their lesson. To me it seems AMD management must consist of copmlete masochist who need their daily punishment, even if it is self-inflicted. tongue.gif
