980 Display port problem

Hello,

The last few days i have been struggling with my 980.

My system:

Mobo: Asus maximus viii Gene
PSU: Corsair cx 750
CPU: Intel 6600K @4.7 ghz
GPU: Asus Strix 980 4 gb OC edition
RAM: Kingston HyperX 2666C

The problem is as following:
I have build a race simulator with car chair, steering weel etc. and i want to use my 3 screens with that new chair setup. I have 2 benq screens with HDMI port, and one old samsung with dvi.
Problem is: my 980 has 1 dvi, 1 HDMI and 3 DP 1.2 output.

I tried the simple 7 euros solution: cheapo chinese adaper from DP to HDMI. I heart about the 20th pin problem, and cautiously tested the adaper in DP outpun number one,not 2 and 3 to block the possibility of the adapter frying my other ports. This adapter did not work.

The symptoms I get:
PC does not recognise the fact that something is plugged in to the DP output.
Thus, windows does not show my third screen.
the monitor itself states that it doesn't receive any signal.

To fix this problem I bought a proper Club 3D active DP 1.2 to HDMI adapter for 35 euros.
With this cable I have the same problems. I have tried port 2 and 3, but i still have the same symptoms.

And the funny thing is: Both cheap and expensive adapters work with my onboard GPU (i have a DP output on the MOBO itself)
So the adapter cannot be the problem.

This i tried thus far:

I have updated the drivers (will try clean install after I post this message)
I have updated the card's bios to the latest version.
I have tried disabling the onboard GPU, even trying to play with the legacy settings for PCIE in bios.
I have disabled all overclocks on system, to check if that worked.

All options i tried are to no avail.

Can someone please help me, what clue am I missing. This is becoming to get frustrating after dumping this amount of time and money in such a trivial problem.
