Make try stereo headphones with the DTS HeadphoneX first, before buying a sound card.

Do you have a budget?

Check out the website Head-Fi.

So quick question then, if I went with something like the DT990's for example that pretty much require an amp/soundcard, I'm guessing I couldn't use my motherboards "DTS Headphone X" software if using a dedicated sound card? If not that pretty much defeats the whole point.

Right, but sound cards have an equivalent to DTS Headphone X. Alternatively you can get an external DAC/amp that has optical TOSLINK input, and connect that to your PC, allowing you to continue using DTS Headphone X with the headphone plugged into the DAC/amp.

Your motherboard's on-board audio should be able to send DTS Headphone X thru it's optical output port.
So if you get a DAC (or DAC/headphone amp) with an optical input, you can still use the DTS HeadphoneX feature.

Haha great minds eh?

OK so yeah that makes sense, so the list is growing already!

Headphones
ModMic
Headphone amp

Thanks for the info, I'll do a bit more research then :-)

So something like this, probably not that actual one but something along those lines?

Or even have separate DAC and AMP, will that work, like these?

DAC (FiiO Taishan D03K) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Analog-Audio-Converter-Optical/dp/B0068IPE40/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1493656281&sr=1-1&keywords=FiiO+D03K

AMP (Fiio A3) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kilimanjaro-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-formerly/dp/B00MFMW29I

So for example it would be set up like:

Optical Out on motherboad using DTS HeadphoneX in to DAC (Fiio D03K) in to AMP (Fiio A3) into 250Ohm Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro

Which with a ModMic should be a little over £200

That would work too. I'm not sure which DACs and amps are the best in this price range though. FiiO and Schiit are popular.

I just wanted to add if you are on windows 10 creators update that the dolby atmos headphone works great. I have a creative titanium HD and I have all sound blaster enhancements turned off and am using it.

it's a bit tricky to get set-up, you have to get the app in the windows app store called Dolby Access, get it downloaded and installed. It gives you a 30 day trial and the app ultimately costs $14.99. I have two weeks left on my trial and I will definitely purchase it and keep using it.

once you have it installed go to windows sound control panel, spatial sound and in the drop down select dolby atmos for headphones.

I find it much better than creative CMSS 3D.

Cool, I keep getting Windows messages about the Windows 10 Creators update but it hasn't actually installed yet for some reason. When it does I'll deffo check it out.

So one last (possibly stupid) question, does each game I play have to have been encoded in DTS in order for me to use DTS HeadphoneX to emulate surround? Like, if a game is Dolby, will surround not work for me? And vice versa, if i end up with 'Dolby Access' would DTS games not work in surround for me?

No, you just have to make sure that your sound device in Windows is set to full range surround sound, and if the game lets you choose speaker configuration you must choose surround sound.
