A single 4k video stream would chew through 1TB of data in 44 hours of use. At 2 hours of TV a day, that is 22 days out of the month you can watch 4k TV for only 2 hours.

Dont forget though that a good portion of the US doesnt even have the bandwidth to support playing a single 4k stream. lol

I did not know streaming 4k was that difficult. I do it all the time on YouTube.

4k isnt the hard part. Its those idiots(movie studios, etc) who stuck in the past and want to stop the future at all cost...

Everyone is bashing this DRM like no tomorrow, The point of DRM isn't to prevent piracy all together. That is impossible since the end user is eventually shown the de-crypted, decompressed file/video trough a video output. The only job is to make sure pirated copies are of lower quality and harder to get your hands on.

The Industry, in their eyes, have won the piracy battle. Sites like pirate bay have been increasingly less reliable when it comes to quality or uptime. This has made legal purchases the more risk-free solution.

I presume that with a Kaby Lake CPU none of these are problems but is that only if my monitor is connected to the onboard HDMI rather than the GPU?????????

EDIT:

vvume on anandtech comments says:

"Yay! Got Netflix 4k working on Edge and Windows app after installing 381.74 on the Creators Update build. I just got the MSI LP 1050 Ti card 2 days ago for my HTPC... The number of hoops one has to go through for 4k on PC is ridiculous."

From the manual, If anyone even bothered to look it up when asking questions about this DRM.
Quote:
"3.4.9 Indirect Display Outputs. A PlayReady Product may Pass (i) the audio portion of decrypted A/V Content, and/or (ii) the video portion of decrypted A/V Content to Indirect Display Outputs. A PlayReady Product may only Pass decrypted A/V Content to Indirect Display Outputs if the PlayReady Product successfully engages HDCP 2.0 or newer over the Indirect Display link."

This doesn't mean I particularly like DRM. As piracy becomes an afterthought companies will use DRM as a new chesspiece. They can force a maximum of devices that are allowed to play a movie or other shenanigans.

Below are the Internet download speed recommendations per stream for playing TV shows and movies through Netflix.

0.5 Megabits per second - Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second - Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for SD quality
5.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for HD quality
25 Megabits per second - Recommended for Ultra HD quality

Or about ~11 hours of 4K footage from netflix.

As of now all DRM were broken under the pressure, if a movie comes out in 4k it will get onto the net in original quality. And there was many cases where DRM posed a huge security risk(im looking at you securom). They basically throw out money on these short lived stopgap measures instead of riding the waves and deliver what the consumer wants...rolleyes.gif The harder they try the more they loose.

It's just so much easier to get a smart TV and use the app to get your 4k streaming. My 4k smart TV was cheaper than my 1070 video card and has no issues with streaming netflix in 4k.

Wait so I have a 10 series card and a compatible television, but have other monitors connected to my gpu. Do those monitors need to be hdcp compliant as well?

Lot's of security and privacy issues with IoT devices.

I'd still prefer a dedicated HTPC, but yeah, it's convenient... but there is a price to pay for that.
