There was just a few things that I found interesting about this. If the kids are really young, Edge and Bing should not be an issue. If they are older they will already be familiar with Chrome and Google, so they might turn their nose up at W10 S. on a cheapo OEM device. The Surface w/W10 S upgrade offer to Pro for $49 ends December 31, 2017. - so, it is a really limited time offer considering you can not get this devices until after June 2017.

With MS , Apple and Google in the ED market, the school will decide on just one of them. It will probably be a financial decision rather than anything else. The three manufacturers are counting on indoctrinating the kids with hopes that they will insist on their platform when the kid graduates. That is how it worked in the past, but now kids have android and IOS phones and tablets and possibly an X-box. Parents probably have a Windows laptop in the home for homework assignments. The previous strategy is no longer a given.

Chromebooks are doing well in schools because Google saw the opportunity before Microsoft did. The OEMs, the schools, the kids and the parents all benefited. Google got about a 1% market share out of it. So why is it so important for Microsoft to join the fray? Windows owns the Enterprise/Ed market ( W7 ) and W10 is its successor. They do not want to lose the synergy and Google might have something up their sleeve for 2020. Apple will be circling the same wagons so MS will be defending on all fronts.

This is a great perspective on the situation, and I agree. My daughter's school is all Chromebooks, and iPads. Probably some PCs on windows (most likely the administrative office, hah), but lots of the teachers are on Macs too.

My local high school uses Macbook Airs for their students. It's way better then Chromebooks program wise.

I'll take the streamlined, simple, ChromeOS over the identity crisis W10S any day. At least it knows what it wants to be. If you want to do big boy stuff with your computer you need full blown windows anyway.

If it really is just a rebrand of RT then you can certainly do MSOffice with it. Wasn't that one of the selling points of RT?
Isn't Windows RT built to function exclusively on ARM core processors? i'm confused, is windows 10S the replacement for windows RT for functionality on non x86 architecture systems? I think the limitations come from that, not that they're exclusively wanting to ban other web browsers. Would a new version of lets say Chrome have to be created to work on a system running this OS? I know there's versions of chrome built to work on non x86 based systems but i think this is a bit different. I don't think this is a replacement for the regular windows 10 home/pro edition..

Edit: Oh i see, this discussion stems from not being able to change the default web browser even if sourcing another one from the windows store.. Interesting..

Eh. Don't mind all that, RT is just a bone for them. This has nothing to do with RT. Even I wondered all the 7 pages why people are comparing the two. RT is exclusive to ARM. This however is an x86-64 OS.

But what ever floats their boat I guess.

Now I'm actually going to Ebay and get myself an RT for my workplace. Almost forgot about that. tongue.gif
