For what it's worth, I leave my dedicated folding rig up 24/7 and it's pretty self-sufficient. Sure the odd power outage may shut down the computer but I've never had any damage from power going out. I'm not even sure that a power outage can cause damage. That said, fold as much as you feel comfortable doing. It's all for The Cause and we're glad to have you on the team!

I sincerely apologize if I mislead you to believing that is what I meant. I full-heartily believe a UPS is a good idea, and that one with conditioning is even better. I run my TV, game console, sound system, and server (which also runs 24/7 for multiple reasons, including folding) off of a UPS with conditioning and will soon be upgrading it to a higher capacity regardless of price as the protection offered is worth not only the monetary value of the equipment, but the mental anguish of the loss, and the time to rebuild.

For clarification, yes power outages can (and do) cause damage to electronic components just like voltage spikes, line noise, and other chronic power issues cause disruptions in electronic devices either through physical damage (i.e. blown ICs to failed drives or boards), or logic errors (voltage reference changes cause logic errors that cause lock-ups, blue screen, and data corruption. This is why RAID cards often have an optional battery, so as to finish writing what is in the cache).

The point I wanted to originally make is that a UPS should not be dismissed simply because it does not offer 12 hour battery run time (which is almost absurd to think necessary, but not unheard of). They are meant to offer you protection until either the power is restored (from utility or generator), or you have an opportunity to safely shutdown equipment. Most systems I work on (from 200 VA to 1 MVA) have a run time of ~5 minutes when at full load (without added battery). As I hope everyone who reads this knows, properly shutting down a device is far better than simply unplugging it while running.

With all of that said, do only fold as you feel comfortable. The combined effort of all who participate is what keeps this research method possible, and it does not fall on any one of us to keep it possible. Mind you without all of you, it would be far more difficult... and boring.

Having lost several thousand dollars worth of folding hardware due power brownouts, I always suggest that any hardware you would not want to lose should be on UPS... That being said, I do not have all my computers on UPS simply because the necessary UPS would cost at least 1/3 the current value of those machines... thumb.gif
If I buy more than just 1 UPS a year, perhaps someday I will have all computers on some basic form of battery protection.

You're right, I did misunderstand you. Sorry for that.

Thanks for taking the time to explain yourself and share a little insight into something that you clearly know quite a bit about. You even explained it in such a way that I can undersand it!

When I said that I wasn't sure that a power outage could affect computer hardware, I really meant it. Thanks for sharing your experience and enlightening me a bit.

In the research lab that I work in, we actually do use homology and ab initio protein modelling tools, that require a stupid amount of compute power. I dont go to Stradford, but I understand the struggles of waiting on a calculation for days. Will sign up for this FAT. im going to be working anyways, dont need my desktop thumb.gif
