EVGA GTX 980 FTW hits 80*C while gaming

Thread Starter
Please help me take care of my hardware.

When gaming it seems like my GPU hits 80*C maximum.

I am using stock clocks and I am not using a fan curve,

I am using EVGA precision x16 and I have not tampered with anything in the software.

I am sure it also has to do with my cases airflow but I am also sure I can do something about this as well.

It's normal. My MSI GTX 980 does the same thing. When it hits 80C it will reduce the speed slightly and will fluctuate between 79C and 80C. You can witness this in my Rise of the Tomb Raider video:

Take off your side panel and see if that drops the temp and if it does add more case fans if it doesn't fix your bios as i noticed after modding my 980 ftw 2984(this is the v1 while i believe the 2986 was v2 and i don't believe the voltage on v1 could be increased so i would probably use your voltage table settings to start off with as over voltage can be your biggest enemy) boosting my clock up to 1506.5 as memory to 3994(max i would go here but probably a better idea to take 100 or 200 off of this) as well as bumping up voltage and power settings it not only ran faster, benchmarked way higher, allowed me to run the less aggressively and remain cool but it also dropped it about 10°c under full load so now I've never seen it get above 72°c ever since and usually I'm never able to get it past high 60's for gpu temp. Having troubles logging in on comp to upload bios maybe I'll come back and do it at a later date or you could always message me if you want to give my custom bios a go but if you do get mine flash at your own risk is your fault for damage blah blah blah. Running mine as hard as i possibly can for a couple months and hasn't burned out yet for me anyways. Bios oc will always give you a higher more stable oc than software based oc. I can run test after test with mine on 3s mark firestrike and score over 14k every time

80°c isn't ideal for these cards and most people don't like hitting or going past that temp but you're at least still in the safe zone as they are good up until 90°c at which time your factory bios will throttle your card to nothing until it drops it temp a bit.
