AMD recently took the wraps off of its Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, a new professional graphics card based on the Vega GPU architecture, sporting 16GB of HBM2 technology. The consumer Radeon RX Vega (RX = consumer) is coming "very soon thereafter" the late-June launch of Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, according to Lisa Su, CEO of AMD. During the 45th annual J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, Su said:

"We're very excited about Vega. Vega is a brand new architecture and actually has really the world's most advanced memory architecture for GPUs. What we did announce at our analyst day was that the first shipping Vega will be the Frontier Edition which will ship with 16GB of memory and will ship towards the latter half of June. You will see the enthusiast gaming platform, the machine learning platform, the professional graphics platform very soon thereafter. And so we will be launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months". Now, let's dissect this statement. Su has said that Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will launch in the "latter half of June" while the "enthusiast gaming platform" will launch "very soon thereafter". Finishing up, Su said that AMD will be "launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months".

If you remember, I had an exclusive industry source tell me that AMD will only have 16,000 Radeon RX Vega graphics cards for the months proceeding the launch, and it looks like this is becoming more and more true everyday. If AMD had no HBM2 supply issues, we should expect a massive flood of cards - but it looks like we might see a trickle release of Vega SKUs.

So...if it's not enthusiast gaming, it's not machine learning, and it's not professional graphics...what's left?

It's a compute card possibly or server based graphics ala Radeon sky. It could also be APU / mobile / consoles.

Gaming = Radeon
Pro Graphics = Radeon Pro
Machine learning = Radeon Instinct

Typical AMD. Says Vega launches H1, and essentially they're doing a paper launch of Frontier Edition at the very end of June lol, with consumer parts "in the coming months" like always. People have been waiting since Pascal launched for AMD to respond, but even Raja practically admits AMD dropped the ball soon after GCN launched, and now they're at least a year behind on Nvidia.

You are saying that they said they would launch Vega in H1 2017, and they are launching Vega in H1 2017. While it is a big disappointment that it isn't the gaming version of Vega they are launching in H1, they never actually said it was the gaming card that they would be launching. I am feeling like I did when Nvidia told us that Pascal would feature HBM memory but didn't mention that it was only the highest end professional cards that would have it. I will do the same thing I did then, be disappointed for a minute and then move on to worrying about things that matter.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct, right?

I don't think people waiting on Vega for gaming particularly care if Frontier Edition barely fulfills their promise of Vega in H1.

At least Nvidia have offer tons of choice for us consumer.

AMD? Other than medicore RX 580 that is a bio-flashable RX 480 which is a disappointment for the high end segment. Nothing much was offered.

The wait seem to be forever. And AMD want us to continue waiting. Ppl need a graphic card now if their PC is dying or slowly dying, they can only wait this much. More delay from them almost guarantee all their potential Vega buyer will turn to more expensive Nvidia offering.

Delays is what kill AMD, not performance. Worst is over-delay, under-perform. That is a double nail to their coffins.

They need to answer Nvidia the same way they are doing with Day 1 Game Ready Drivers. Problem is that the CPU market has to pick up some steam and elevate their R&D budget. If anything AMD GPU will only start to get competitive if major change in the market happens. That change is when we cant drop below 7nm. At the same time if Zen makes them money they will have more money for NAVI.

Nvidia is doing more harm to the market with them prices.

Let say AM released RX 490 back in July 2016 but 1070 and 1080 where better buys. What would be the difference? You got to release a product that at the very minimum is better then the competition at certain things. AMD has tried every hand against Nvidia and never won.

HD 4870 vs GTX280/260 > Launch at same time at much lower cost with very comparable performance (Nvidia still crushed due to margins)
HD 5870 vs GTX480/470 > Launch 6 month ahead of Nvidia and still failed to secure a larger user base. This was even after Fermis poor showing in power/heat.
HD 7970 vs GTX680 > Launch 2 month ahead with high end performance and still lost the the cheaper to make less powerful on paper GTX680.
R9 290X vs Titan/780/780 Ti > Launch 5 month after but at lower price and higher performance, still does not effect their market share.
R9 Fury X vs 980 Ti > Launch at same time with same price and same premium build and hope on selling due to HBM but fails miserably.
Polaris 10 vs Pascal > Dont even bother to fight a losing battle with Nvidia high end and target the larger mid range user base. Positive effect as market share increases.

Shouldnt we have more leaks now, like someone must have a vega card?

So basically we will see Vega drop in July then? Assuming 'very soon' of latter half of June is within a month.

You would think right?

It's going to be a minute before we see anything.

You know, as someone who has been waiting for Vega; I think I just may get a 1080ti FE and slap a generic waterblock on it and wait for Vega+/Navi just like I'm waiting on Ryzen+.

I admit that this isn't completely rational, but again...this is a hobby that I enjoy as a pasttime. Waiting for AMD has effectively put my hobby on hold. I want to build something, so a new case and redesigned WC loop with a new video card should fit the bill.

This appears to be the case. Lisa said that they would be launching all of the iterations of Vega over the next two months, which would be June and July.

Now we just need to confirm the rumored $600 price tag.

You can have the card right now but without drivers its a paperweight.
