Moving from 3570K after 5 great years

Greetings,

I'm moving from 3570K by the end of this year and I just want to consult on which one to go now, 1600X? 7800X? 7700K? I'm building a pretty expensive PC which is supposed to serve me at least 4 years. Well, with occasional GPU upgrades...

Depends on what you are doing, and how you are doing it.

The 7700k still gets peak FPS in games. No doubt about that. But is losing potentially half of your productivity in formatting a video worth an extra 5 FPS in games? It wouldn't be worth it if you play at 60Hz i can tell you that. If you play at 1440P it wouldn't be worth it either. As i stated it really depends on what you do. That being said you can see which path i went. However i just wanted to support AMD so that they don't go under. Losing 5% peak FPS is a small price to pay so that there is competition to push Intel forward, and not bog us down with Quad cores for another 9 years.

If gaming @ 1080p is your major/only priority and want to max out on fps, then the 7700k is the best choice.

For everything else, overall,(imo) the R7 1700 is the best CPU you could get. If you're not into overclocking then its the 1700x.

Would go with Ryzen if it was my choice. Look at a 1700x or 1700 if you're considering a 7700k. Versatility of the Ryzen platform and gaming prowess when OCed can't really be refuted.

Capping at 100FPS? I'd contemplate Ryzen for that. I don't like making decisions for people, i just like providing the facts. The facts are that the 7700k peaks higher FPS, but not by a whole lot. The 1700 would be better for anything else though, streaming, zipping files, compressing a video, anything. The 7700k will get you higher peak FPS, but that is it.

Playing a newer game, PUBG, which is optimized like trash i still hit 113 FPS at 1080P on my 1700x at 3.7 Ghz. If it was better optimized i'd likely hit my 144FPS limit. Well above your 100 FPS limit.

If you have a gtx 1080 in your system with an i5 - you'll prolly not fully utilizing it. If sticking with the same card, then just get an i7 3770K now. Prices of newer cpu and board should be coming down but not sure about end of this year. Single 1080 or even 1080 Ti shld be easy on the i7.

@Slaughtahouse I sure game and I'm using my PC for various tasks, I'm not running a YT channel or anything like that so my 3D work is limited now

Right now I just game and use some other programs simultaneously + Chrome with at least 30 tabs open lol. In terms of FPS in games... I really don't care if have 5fps less or something.

Honestly, i'd recommend you the 1700. I bought the 1700x before i knew how they were binned ( I pre-ordered). Yes, you'll lose that top end 5 FPS on games, but like you said it isn't a deal breaker. It also has the biggest potential down the road when games will presumably use more threads. Plus you'll be able to slot Zen 2+ in there later if you want some IPC gains. They are making a 14nm+ 7nm and 7nm+ Zen that will all work on the AM4 motherboards. So there will be more than 1 upgrade available like intel.

I don't find having 30 tabs open in chrome particularly stressful on a CPU, but it is always nice to have those 8 cores in-case something bogs you down. I find some of my monitoring software like CAM, or Ryzen master will use a whole thread to itself. But with 16 threads, i don't really care anymore.

I also back this idea. I think if you dig deep enough on the web, you can get the i7 3770K for a really good price. Sub $200 USD for sure.

If you want to spend the more and get a new platform, go for the AMD 1700 as it will be "future proof" for a good few years. However, there is a huge cost associated with this. New ram, motherboard, and obviously CPU. It will end up costing you three times the cost and you will not receive 3x the value.

Yes, I want to move to a new platform and I think that this year is golden for that. I already have G.Skill 2x8GB 3200MHz CL14 RAM.
@Shiftstealth Yeah, I think you're spot on. Well, in 1440p and above the main stress is mainly on GPU anyhow so it doesn't really matter if it's 1700, 1600X, 7800X or does it?

Depends on how you play your games. If you're chasing high fps, in combination with a high refresh monitor, the load will be back on the CPU again, in most cases.

See how 7800X and 7820X perform. If you're going Ryzen I'd just buy a 1600 non-x and OC as much as possible, or wait - Zen 2 should be out early next year.

Well everybody loves higher fps in games
smile.gif
For instance, my upgrade from 60Hz to 100Hz ultrawide was a quantum leap in everything I've ever experienced in PC gaming, totally different dimension of gameplay and immersion, especially in shooters like BF4. Now it seems like I'm playing a completely new game with better/faster PC
smile.gif
So, I can say that I'm perfectly fine with 100Hz because I don't do fps tournaments anymore...
Now, I think that load in this scenario is still mainly on GPU until 120+Hz but I could be wrong of course.

Then go for the 1600X (for higher clock rate) or 1700 (if you want the extra cores/threads).

I don't think many multi-core optomized games offer any tangible difference between 12 or 16 threads and the 1600x extra boost will provide a few more frames while being cheaper than the 1700.

Don't spend the money on intel's new enthusiast platform. The value proposition of it compared to going with AMD will be ridiculous.

Alot will come out before you'll have to choose by the end of the year.
^^

@OP With that said and with what is on the market now, I hope you have enough information on what will suite your needs and budget best. Since you're waiting, it's a bit hard to predict what will be best. In any case, if you had to buy today, I would look at the 1600x / 1700 cpu's from AMD. They're excellent value.
