Delided 7700k vs Ryzen 7

I'm going to be ordering parts for my upcoming build in a couple of weeks and have been going back and forth concerning cpu's. I'm going to be only gaming @ 1440p and running some background applications like discord,TS, wiki's, twitch videos, and such.
I know KB is the more optimal choice for gaming but intel's shady practices with their TIM's (and their general ****tiness milking the community ) is making me want to delid them and apply liquid metal. I know it voids my warranty and I could potentially damage the CPU but it's a risk I'm willing to take if I get the 7700k. While Ryzen 7 at 1440p performs pretty much the same or at most 10 fps behind if paired with something like 3200mhz ram.

So what would you guy's suggest? Should I go with a delidded 7700k or with a Ryzen 7 chip. And also it is probably worth noting that the cpu will be paired with a 1080ti and a g-sync monitor. And, I'm not looking to upgrade the cpu and mobo for at least 4 years.

And one of my worries with going with AMD is that most of the games I play are older games that only rely on 2 cores and all the benchmarks I see online are of modern games. And that when newer titles are released I could almost guarantee a smooth(er) launch with better otpimization if I go with Intel, since that's what most developers support. Idk, maybe I'm just paranoid

Appreciate it,

Glokta

If it were me, i would go Ryzen 7. The performance of Ryzen is only going to get better as time goes on with AGESA updates and optimizations.

What games are you planning on playing? What video card will you have? At 1440p and above you become more GPU bound than CPU bound so it shouldn't matter as much.

With all the reviews and feedback I have read regarding the Ryzen 7, so far people are pretty happy with it. At most you are looking at something like 5-10% less performance which is not bad.

Additionally, there are tools you can get to delid your chip. Rokkit makes on and I have found it to work really well (I recently delidded my chip).

For all the streaming and video stuff you will want the Ryzen. If you were only gaming then you could use a Pentium

I'm going to be running a 1080ti. And the games I mostly play are Arma 3 Multiplayer (sometimes modded), Rust survival, Squad, and a bunch of platformers. And I do play lots of current titles which I already know what to expect. And regarding Rokkit, thats the same kit I'm planning on using if I do go with KB. As well as some Conductonaut

The way I see it go for Ryzen. Better bang for your buck.

If you are playing older games that are limited to 2 threads i don't see how Ryzen doesn't hammer it anyways.

First off - Sand dan Glokta is a boss. The man is a monster, one of my favourite characters.

As for Ryzen vs 7700K...

The IPC difference is around 6-7%. The rest is really clocks. Ryzen easily eats alive almost all old games just as well as the 7700k simply because it already is overpowering them. Exceptions like STALKER and its mods exist though.

I can say from using my own weak i5 4460. It is actually slower than an OCed or boosting Ryzen 7 1700 in both IPC (by around 4%) and clocks. I still generally do well in almost all old games. The few that are an issue are ALSO an issue on the i7 7700K (just less of an issue).

The thing is though, you are mostly playing old games exclusively. In all scenarios bar 2-3 (where RYzen can actually have better IPC than Intel) the i7 7700K will be faster. However, I think it wont matter for most of those old games as both CPUs easily push their pixels. Using GEDOSATO or VSR and injecting more AA types and/ or HBAO with Nvidia Inspector will again stress your GPU.

The Ryzen chip has a better upgrade path (Ryzen + and ++ will be available for AM4), is for sure eventually gonna win future games, and is better at content creation and multi-tasking. Ultimately its a tie IMHO. I play mostly older games but cant upgrade often so I'd choose the already powerful enough Ryzen chip and love the awesome multi-tasking and longevity. But for you, perhaps the 7700K is better.

... I didnt help at all and made it worse lol. Egh whichever you choose will do good for sure though.

It's unlikely with current and future titles moving more and more towards multiple-core utilization. New generation API's like DX12 and Vulkan are also encouraging the move. As of right now, highly clocked quadcores and hexacores are doing great because DX11 is at its peak.

Haha I'm glad someone got the reference.

As for what you stated, I know that either way I'm going be getting great gaming performance even as more of these updates roll out. But I am leaning more towards Ryzen since like you said, the future Ryzen chips will be compatible with AM4 and Ryzen looks more "future-proof" (Even though I hate saying it). When I build my PC I don't want to upgrade my cpu/mobo for at least 4 years, and I feel Ryzen will let me do that. Not to mention I'm getting a nice 144hz g-sync monitor so I might not be getting a solid 144fps, but anything above 100 will make me happy

Abbercombie is a very good author. Sand dan Glokta is his best creation so far (and the bar is high).

BTW which games would you be playing? And are you willing to OC the Ryzen chip too?

No doubt about Abercrombie.

And as for the game, Arma 3 multiplayer (modded as well), Dirt, Project cars, Rust Survival, Squad, KSP, Total war games, platformers. And more modern games as well, like BF1, Siege, Balckwake, PUBG, RS2 vietnam, etc.. The list goes on an on lol

And I will be using a Noctua NHD15 so i do plan to OC.

Out of those, only ARMA 3 (which is SLOWLY getting better ) and PUBG are an issue on Ryzen. They are an issue on 7700K as well but more on Ryzen

The rest is about the same for both. RS2 Vietnam runs good enough on my i5 4460 so the faster Ryzen wont have an issue with it.

EDIT: Results are as usual, Ryzen does under perform slightly at 1440p compared to the 7700k. But I can expect about ~10 fps increase since I'm going to be running a 1080ti
Yeah give or take. Wish they'd of used the 1080 ti all around since it helps remove the gpu bottleneck as much as possible (without going overboard with the Titan xp).

My personal view is I wouldn't want to invest too heavily into 4c/8t today.
