Announced at Microsoft's E3 show earlier this week, Metro Exodus marks the first of the post-apocalyptic shooter series to take place predominantly above ground. Billed as "more sandbox survival" as opposed to strictly open world, 4A Games' latest will also draw from GSC World's similarly themed Stalker series as far as world design is concerned.
4A was of course founded by former members of GSC and, speaking to PC Gamer from the E3 show floor, executive producer Jon Bloch explains exactly what players can expect from Exodus.
"It's a combination of the classic Metro gameplay that everyone is used to from previous games where it's that linear style of gameplay. The level that we show in the trailer is later in the game and is one of our non-linear levels," says Bloch. "We're doing this mix of classic gameplay and this new non-linear style and we wanted to maintain what our fans expect, what they've known, and what they're used to and love, while also introducing something new.
"This will blend what we've done over the past two games, plus something that the core team at 4A Games has done in the past with the Stalker games. We're not entirely open-world, then, it's more sandbox survival and everything is tied together with an overarching storyline that still carries the player through. They're still feel like they're playing a Metro game."
Most interestingly, Exodus' dynamic world is seasonal which means players will face different enemies in different environments, and will also learn more about the travelling companions as the journey wears on.
...
Metro Exodus is due next year, however check out Samuel's full interview with Bloch and creative director Andriy "Prof" Prokhorov in this direction.
Also: ""The game picks up where Metro: Last Light left off with the good ending. Artyom is back and now he needs to join together with a small group of survivors and board a train and escape Moscow. "
Apparently the majority of the game takes place above ground, which I am kinda sad about. The surface missions were definitely my least favorite in both games.

Without doing any research, I guess it is because they've left Moscow.
My guess is that the train from the trailer will probably pass through various zones with varying amounts of radiation and toxicity.
I have 83 hours in original 2033, 65 hours in original Last Light, 16 and 25 hours in Redux versions respectively. Think I finished them lol.
One thing I hope for is that there will be deciding choices to make during the game and to experience it to the fullest one would need to at least finish the game twice, like 2033. I'm not sure if so much above ground gameplay is good or not, will have to just wait and see. Being more similar to STALKER is not a bad thing, but Metro need to stay true to original concept. Either way pre-order purchase for me as usual.
Its amazing from what they developed (previous Metros) with such low budget and conditions in the studio.
i just hope they keep the same type of gameplay, trying to minimize the QTE -cinematic experience, you know that emotional involvement and on rails type of game is like a movie/series...
i always worry when i see financial success go to the heads of the developers because their next goal is to make a game that reaches even more people, and only way to do that is by compromise, which is the watering down. "expanding their audience" the worst words any fan wants to hear.

I played through a few times, I think 7 times for 2033. Every time I build a new PC or upgrade I play through at least 2033 to see how it scales with new hardware. I also played with different combination of weapons and in different ways through each level. I also played through 2033 on 360 a couple of times to get all achievements for my friend. Going to play through each game at least once more now in 4K before Exodus release.

Was that because of the art style or game play?

I think its because the outside seem so liner and closed off while tunnels have these properties without have to change the game design. From the trailer Exodus seem like it has gotten the outside right.
My first Metro 2033 playthrough took me about 16 hours IRC. Metro Last Light took me 19 hours.
Due to me editing the Wiki I now have over 100 in both. I had to replay and get info and/or test things.
Also you have many DLC mission in the game
if you have the Redux edition.
