[2017] 1440p 60Hz vs 1080p 144Hz Monitor, what to choose?

The great struggle.

The last thread asking this question is from a year ago, and seeing how the market has changed with 4K monitors and 1440p/ 144Hz monitors I think it's time to ask that question again. Except now we're looking from a more mainstream point of view.

The enthusiasts seem to be all asking about 4k VS ultrawide VS 1440/144, but what about us, more budget oriented users?
I'm currently using a 1080p 60Hz panel (albeit overclocked to 80). Which upgrade path would be the best for me, if even there is one considering I have an R9 390. A card that is more or less equal to an RX 580 or a GTX 1060 which are considered mainstream video cards for gamers.

Or maybe you should just wait and buy a cheap 4K monitor instead?

TL;DR Mainstream GPU, 1080/60 monitor. Go 1440p or 144Hz?

If you are gaming get a high frame rate monitor and if you can get freesync/gsync also. Personally I would say get a 1440p 144Hz freesync/gsync for the future gpu upgrade. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0JC-00A3-00001 If you can swing the ~$500 price and see your self sticking with AMD. Otherwise 1080p 120/144Hz with freesync/gsync.

I personally would go for the 1440p 60hz... again.

I do love high refresh don't get me wrong, the improvement it makes is 110% noticeable..
But for me the colour and res up did more..

I don't get right into the competitive side of things too hard though.
I'm rank 59 worldwide for kills in my current fave FPS.
Could I perform better and have a slightly higher rank with the high refresh screen? possibly.. But to me the visuals are more important.
I would rather enjoy my few hours of gaming after work more, rather then get a few extra kills.

My monitor broke, so I needed to a buy a new one, so do I get high res or get the same res. I ended up getting the same res monitor. (with 144hz)

My reasoning is, whenever you upgrade your monitor a graphic card upgrade will need to follow. 1080p = 2 mil pixels, 1440p = 3.6 mil pixels, your graphic card will almost need to do double the work to output the same pixels.

1080p is an obsolete resolution that's on it's way out. No way would I buy a new monitor at 1080p resolution in 2017. In 3-5 years, most likely no current games or applications will support 1080p resolution any more, just like they don't support the resolution (1280x1024) of the old monitor that I still use, even though that resolution was once common & high end.

Having said that, I don't think gimping one's self down to 60 FPS with a 60 Hz monitor is good either.

So I think both of the options listed in the thread title are bad, but the 1080p option is worse.

Been on 120hz 1080p, 120hz 1440p for years. Now on 60hz 4k and not going back. Not a hard core gamer, so quite happy with it. People have different priorities with monitors. Less than 20% of my PC time is spent gaming. My no.1 priority is screen size, which therefore requires high res to avoid seeing pixels. Gaming (not competitive or fast paced) and movies are very immersive on a large screen. If fast paced or competitive gaming is your no.1 priority, then go for a high Hz monitor.

I know that, Ideally I'd go for a 240Hz HDR 2160p ultrawide monitor, but not only these are not out yet, I simply don't have the budget for it, hence my question. What would you buy if your budget were restricted to being able to afford either a 144Hz panel or a 1440p one.

EDIT:

Any opinions on the AOC AG241QX? Never used that brand, and I've been using IPS for the past 2 years now.

Looks good for a TN but it has the normal problems of vertical gamma shift and not great colors that all TN displays have. A little too high pixel density for myself. I would prefer to use a display at 1:1 scaling and increase my usable desktop area but it depends on where you are placing your displays and what you are comfortable with.

Yea, I feel like this density would be perfect for me, as on 1080p the pixels can get a bit annoying. So basically, the only downside of this one is the TN panel? Well, you gotta compromise somewhere. IPS monitors start at 1.5x the price.

1440p 60hz vs 1080p 144hz is actually a very easy question to answer:

If you spend much time playing fast paced games (shooters especially) competetively (competetively doesn;t mean pro level, let's say you just play for serious and really try your best instead of just playing around and you just enjoy being good at your game) and indeed you can;t afford a card that would allow you for 144fps in 1440p then 1080p 144hz monitor is the right choice.

If however you spend most of your time playing games casually and things like immersion are more important to you then 1440p 60hz screen should be better because of a better image quality.
