It's a long term reliability thing. As is they use CLU because it's what they've used in the past and they know it lasts. This is especially important now that they offer a longer warranty. He mentioned over in the Skylake-X thread that he might look into TGC.

They're unlikely to offer both since then they have to either re-lid or wait for orders to bin them. They'll use whatever gives them the best performance and longrtivity. You're likely only looking at a 1 or 2 degree difference anyways.

Pricing will be more or less the same. A bit cheaper because more chips will fall ikn the 5.1GHz bin after delidding, a bit more expensive since the 1 year warranty hasn't been factored in the price yet.

I see that you no longer mention the percentage of CPU's that are able to hit a certain clock. From a business perspective it makes sense; why would you provide this kind of info as it might drive away customers who are willing to play the odds now that they have a rough idea of their chances. If this is not the case then what is the reasoning behind removing this information?

Also I was just looking over the warranty and noticed this:

I don't imagine having any problems that would require warranty service. My 7600k 5.2Ghz has been holding up fine since January. Still, it doesn't really seem fair (or instill confidence in my purchase, exactly the purpose of a warranty) that if I would run into an issue that I could end up with a standard un-binned CPU of lesser value as a replacement. It's still nice to know your covered if something goes wrong but considering the service you provide essentially what we are paying for is a binned CPU and receiving anything less as a replacement doesn't seem fair.

One last question that hasn't been brought up. Why the standard use of an AVX offset now? Personally I don't like the idea of this newish feature at all and so I don't use it. If it can't run at a certain clock then it can't run at a certain clock. I understand people will have differing opinions on this but using something like this will always feel like a "fake overclock" to me.

In the end it's nice that you extended the coverage to a year. I bought when it was still only 30 days and you used the same wording for that warranty so I'm probably nitpicking a bit here but it seems odd to me to see a warranty that offers such a great potential to receive a less valuable product as a replacement. Particularly in this instance where the product you are buying is not the chip itself but the binning service.

Well I like that your including your delid service on most of the CPUs now. I can also live with the warranty full of holes, at least I'm covered if something goes wrong.

The standard use of AVX offsets are what's going to keep me from buying another CPU from you guys. This is fundamentally a fake overclock. I don't agree with the use of this "tweak" to reach inflated OC numbers. AVX is a lot more widespread nowadays witch is pretty easy to test by using this setting. You can track the constant down clocking pretty easily.

In any case just my humble opinion.

If they can't overclock without using cheats, not tweaks but cheats to get their then I guess I just don't see the point. You do realize that the AVX offsets is Intel's specification right? It's not something that SL made up to "cheat".

Taking the 7900X as an example, Intel's stock settings are:
  • 4.0 GHz non-AVX all cores
  • 3.6 GHz AVX all cores
  • 3.3 GHz AVX512 all cores
