So it looks like I may need to replace psu, anyone have the same issue?

I had a faulty PSU, some odd little niggles I put down to an older pc. Vega blew up the PSU. When I replaced with a new one all the little niggles were gone.

Odd thing was 290x crossfire ran ok on it. So yeah I wouldn't be surprised if PSU is the issue.

Have you tried this (if your PSU has enough slots):

Yes, I have read this before and tried both methods. Both daisy chain and separate cables

I have 2 options, but should find out more from retailer tomorrow...

1. Send back GPU for full refund and then RMA Corsair replacement PSU. Total cost 20 Euro postage

Cons: Corsair may not find fault and even if I get new PSU may still have same issue

2. Keep GPU and get new PSU (Seasonic Titanium) Total Cost 150-250Euro

Cons: New PSU may still have same issue and my no-quibble return period expires to return gpu(14 days)

Just saying but just deal with the coil whine.
My RX 480 had a bit of coil whine.
I had my "old" psu with my gtx 1080 and it had loud & terrible coil whine.
Changed the PSU for a new and expensive one, same terrible coil whine, so I just accepted the coil whine.
Now with my Vega I also have coil whine so meh, althought this one have less coil whine than my msi 1080

Just looking at your paste picture ... it look like your high temps problem maybe cause by not using enough paste on the core ... your X is kinda weak there If I were you Ill try repaste, remember GPU is not a cpu its always better to put more than not enough on a gpu , plus you have a mold core forget the multiple X and do the pea or a big single X ( did the pea on mine 2 time cause I forgot the thermal pad first time and the coverage was very good). I really think the multiple X on a mold core is a very bad idea creating air pocket.

What about a 3rd option of setting a frame/fps limiter? I only have hear coil wine once, and it was in a loading screen where FPS pegged 1000 or something. I just set it to my monitor refresh rate (75hz for me). Nothing since

Hrm scratch, need to test moar.

Ok... Seems GPU-Z recent version likes to not spool up the GPU properly if HBCC is enabled. If you then close and re-open GPU-Z with HBCC still enabled, comp crash.

At least it does for me.

You should have a square 2mm pad that goes directly behind the GPU where the crossbar would be, then you should have enough 1.5mm strips to go along both rows of VRMs, but you only really need to make contact with the multiplier chips (little black square ICs).

Check the manual for how many strips your supposed to have and where you use them, if the manual is missing then do a warranty claim for missing hardware (manual counts as hardware).

How loud actually is it though and does it come directly from the card? there should only be a very slight amount of whine that you could hear with low fan speeds on random occasion, this is normal for high power hardware. You're basically guaranteed to hear a fraction of whine through the motherboard as well, but that's usually easily dealt with by balancing the volume between your audio hardware.

We could have an entire thread dedicated to TIM application theory. When I went over to lapping chips and heat sinks I went with the razor blade (thin spread) method, which worked really well with soldered IHS and water blocks. Vega was mirror finish... used a thin spread, dot, X on the three surfaces with the EK block... AS-5. Think I went this route cause EK doesn't have any (and I have yet to see) a recommendation for die pressure... that being the case 'just a lill more than normal' was the right move for me. Swedge the goo out just beyond the edge of the chip, not so much it spurgles all over the place, but enough to be "reasonably" confident there isn't some huge potato air pocket in the center.

TIM is one of those things, my experience has been people tend to favor the one that has worked for em in the past. I keep a couple tubes of AS around, plus a junk drawer with all the freebie MXs and whatnot that usually come bundled. Even mixed em before from different manufacturers... alchemy at work! wink.gif
