CD Projekt RED is working with original board game designer Mike Pondsmith to ensure their new Cyberpunk 2077 magnum opus stays true to the original.

Despite the massive next-generation tech barrier, CD Projekt RED wants to ensure Cyberpunk 2077 is as authentic to the original source material as possible. The studio has been working with original Cyberpunk 2020 board game designer Mike Pondsmith to ensure the game exemplifies the unique techno-punk universe he helped make back in the late 80s and early 90s. Pondsmith said that CD Projekt Red "gets cyberpunk" and that the studio is passionate about the fictional series. "They're actual fans and they know stuff about Cyberpunk that I've forgotten."

"At core, unless you have the meaning behind the black leather and the neon, you lose what cyberpunk is. That's the problem with getting Cyberpunk made as a videogame; people don't get it. They think it's about action heroes quipping as they take down corporations."

Pondsmith goes on to highlight how he's worked with the Polish studio to help guide their progress through the massively ambitious game, and shape its high-tech world.

"What happened was, around four years ago they called us up and I'd never heard of them. I was imagining a tiny studio out in Poland that had done very little, and then I looked at The Witcher 2 and thought, "Wow. This is good. This is really good." So I flew out to see them and realised they were genuine fans of Cyberpunk.

"At the beginning of the project, I talked to them a lot, every week. For a long time they didn't realize I'd worked in digital, but I've been doing pen and paper for 20 years and digital for fifteen. When I was explaining Cyberpunk to them, I was explaining the mechanics in a way that they understood and that helped them to realize I could contribute more to the actual design.

"Now I do a lot more meta-talk to the whole team, to make sure that they get the gag and they know what the touchstones are. From there I got involved more in actual gameplay mechanics; what can we get away with."

As we've previously reported, Cyberpunk 2077 will indeed have flying cars and large, next-generation city-scapes with impressive AI. Pondsmith highlights that he helped the team adapt key features of the board game into video game form, and give ideas to shape the scope of the project.

"So a lot of the conversations we've had on the team are not "can we do this?" We can do just about anything. Instead, it's me explaining why I did it in pen and paper, and then we figure out if we need it again, and whether it serves a different purpose in a videogame. I know why flying cars are there in the original but that's not necessarily the same functionality we need in 2077. Everything is taken apart in terms of what it does to the game, how it differs from tabletop, and getting the right feel."

I love CDPR but how long will this take to make. They have not even shown a single frame of the game. Is this going to come 3-4 years from now because that is a long time.

Honest question, was there any actual gameplay shown? I thought that was just a cutscene/promo movie...?

No there hasn't been any game play shown so far, and everyone should relax a little, instead of it being a rushed buggy hot-mess like 95% of games these days, the longer they take to make this game, the more polished it will be as a release product, you can't have it both ways.

So far this still looks like vaporware, See if its been in dev for atleast 4+ years as its 2017 now, then they should of long since had the engine ready and atleast some form of gameplay footage to show us, But they've nothing or atleast not shown anything so i doubt it will ever be released.

Probably so the entitled posturing brigade of know-it alls don't comment on early footage, when the final game is missing some neon lights from a district. The same ones that likely wouldn't have the processing power to run the game maxed out anyway.

Calling it vaporware, at least for a developer of a franchise called Witcher 3 is pretty unwise I'd say. If you were following the news about Cyberpunk 2077, you would have known that CDP is ACTUALLY making the game as we speak. The fact that you didn't see anything, doesn't mean the project is fake.

They are making something different, and making something new takes time. If you want to play rehashed concepts and gameplays, go play Fallout 4, it's the same game for a decade now.

The "fake" game and its developers are so far making the following:

* They are making seamless gameplay map (meaning it will not have any loading screens each time you enter a building) bigger than Witcher 3's area
* Said map is going to be a massive city on its own
* Multiplayer and singleplayer transition will be seamless as well
* In order to develop the AI and massive city, they requested funds from both EU and Polish government
* Polish government acknowledged the request and officially invested the game

I expect CP2077 to be released between Q4 2018 and Q2 2019.
Forget 2018 because there has not even been anything shown in E3. If they show it on E3 2018 then maybe we might see it on Q2 2019 at best but it will be Q2 2020 the way its going.
