So I bought a Dell Perc 6/i for my server, which ran fine. It is how ever getting a bit long in the tooth and I've been having software issues. So it needs to be replaced with something that supports Mini-SAS. Hoping to get a card that has some form of management software and at least 2 ports (I'll be buying MINI-sas to sas fanout cables.) Was hoping to keep it under $250 if possible. I've only ever dealt with HP and Dell as far as RAID cards go.
Is mini-sas an absolute need or can they be replaced with some SFF-8087 sas cards? Those ones are newer and you can get them with management software.
That is indeed what the card looks like. I currently have a SAS 8484 to x4 SATA cable, but will be replacing the drives also. A dual 8087 connection would probably be the best route to go.
You may need to find something from Lenovo or IBM to install the software. However, either way you would have your management software you requested. These can be had second hand easily as well as old server/work station cards on ebay for around the same price.
That looks perfect, thank you so much for your time. There's no good feeling about rebooting a server 2 months before you replace the RAID card and drives, only to find out one of the drives died and your array is degraded. Really didn't want to replace a drive for 2 months.
I would HIGHLY recommend you maintain a backup bud. The moment you plug in that replacement drive and rebuild your array, you could be setting yourself up for a world of hurt. The rebuild process is tough on drives so another could fail. RAID 5 w/ 2 failed disks is bad news (and occasionally extremely difficult to recover from).
Another option is an LSI 9260-8i. Has a few more feature and more grunt for the processor. Very similarly priced to the LSI 9240. SAS 2008 vs SAS2108 controllers. 9260 uses 2108.
Currently it's NTFS, because I need to have AD DS running. Though I suppse O could research into setting up a different File system for the data storage. It it also where my Windows Server VMs are stored.
I've haven't used this software yet, but appears to be well respected. Says it's an Array backup. Aka...it can provide snapshots for a RAiD 5 of 4 disks. Might be what you need.
Still trying to figure out the hardware needs. I have a raid 50 with 12-2TB disks (plus 1 hot spare).
Richie you are asking for trouble with that array there bud. Minimum 2 hot spares per RAID 5 and if you have more than 5 after hot spare, ad another. Too many large raid 5s (8-10+ drives) come into my shop with multiple failed disks. Or, at the very least you have reporting enabled and monitor the RAID regularly.
