Hi,

I used Intel SSD 480GB for 4 years now, and suddenly windows hangs and after i restart the computer, the ssd doesn't get recognized anymore in bios or in windows, i have also tried the ssd on a different pc and it also doesn't get recognized by the BIOS

my question does it mean my SSD is dead without a chance of recovery? and since it's my first ssd that died on me, does this what happen when SSD die?
as mechanical HDD when it's about to be dead they still allow the data to be read although it will have some data error or you hear those clicking noise. so how to know when your ssd about to die so you have chance to backup?

thanks

Yes it died, The intel 520 uses a Sandforce controller and that's what they do when they die, I just had a Sandforce SSD die a few months ago as well. I think it has something to do with the firmware getting corrupted. The NAND is most likely fine.

Thanks for the info garikfox, did you successfully get the warranty of them? as i heard the warranty for 520 ssd is 5 years

anyway strangely the drive get recognized when i connected them to an usb external enclosure so i manage to backup the data. although in the first try i do got bsod while copying data from them, but shutdown and copy again and it copied the data without issue

from i read here http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead/2 they said ssd will usually give notification when it's about to die and will change to read only mode and will be inaccessible in the next power cycle, shame it doesn't do that for sandforce controller

anyway here is the crystaldiskinfo from the ssd

Yeah looks like the NAND is fine, I'm pretty sure its the firmware. I never tried to warranty mine I just threw it away.
