I dont want to go into to many details but I got laid off and had to sell my last Rig. A buddy of mine is helping me out on some parts and I am just wondering if the 2500K is worth investing into.
He is giving me a 2500K, gigabyte mobo, HDD and I got a case. I will need to save and buy a PSU, Ram, Video and monitor. The reason im asking is because ram prices are really high. 16GB ddr3 is 100 bucks and DDR4 isnt much more. I dont do any programming I just play games.
Mainly witcher 3. As for a monitor Iam thinking a 1440p paired with a 1060\1070 when I get the funds.
I would say yes, when overclocked. It should be fairly easy to get to 4.2GHz+ and can handle most modern games, especially at 1440p where the graphics card will be the limit most the time.
If RAM is expensive, you can get by with 8GB while you save up. I think you'll want to upgrade in the next 2 years so I wouldn't invest too much in DDR3.
Check out the marketplace on here. The pricing is usually pretty good compared to ebay or newegg. As for the CPU, I still use mine in my steam machine without a problem, at stock clocks I might add.
Browsing around with some benchmarks for 1440p Witcher 3 and it looks like that 1070 is borderline, you honestly might be better going with a nice 1080p display maybe something with high hz for less demanding games.
Thanks guys. I'll def check out the market place. I did find a 8gb ddr3 12800 on Craigslist for 20.00 but no power supply right now so I can't test the stick out before purchase. I feel safe knowing I got it from a reliable source.
im getting the 2500K, gigabyte board, hdd and case free. i will have to buy
PSU
RAM
Video card
Monitor
we had to sell everything when i got laid off. so Im basically having to start over from scratch. I will use my TV for now and ill have to find 16gb of rm cheaper then most sites which are about 100 for 16GB.
if you can get the ram, psu for less than $150.00 then your probably OK. because you can sell the cpu and mobo for atleast $150 on ebay.
so you you will break even. the gpu though, that's going to come down to how much you wanna get back to gaming and probably only you can decide. if i lost my job, i'd probably hold off on the whole thing and wait. but thats me and i'm a little more mature (in age).
But I was desperate to get back to gaming after gifting my stuff away so I jumped in on my deal. everyone raves at the 2500k being a beast. and it still gets the job done in my situation. although, if coffee lake was here, i'd be on that.
i started a new job a couple weeks ago so ill get back on my feet and im planning on selling my laptop for 200 to cover ram/psu cost. The only thing I will need to save for is a monitor but will use TV till then and a decent video card. I would never invest money in a PC if I was completely laid off. Im going to save for the PC and a Car so its not going to be an over night process
