So I'm thinking about moving to a 1060 or 980 from my rx470. I'm just getting kinda tired of AMD cards being non existent because of mining (and taking forever to release)and because of the poor OpenGL performance. I love AMD but lately they haven't been giving what I need.
I mostly play MMOs with the AAA title on occasion when they're cheap to buy so vulkan/Dx12 isn't going to be important for me for at least 2-3yrs.
Which do you guys think would be a better option, the 1060 or the 980? I'll be selling my 470 to make up some of the cost.
I just read even the 10xx are getting there, so get the newer model. My Hd 7950 died and can't find an amd replacement. So, i got me a 1050. In Africa and Asia - shelves are filled with nvidia. Zero AMD.
@aDyer, they are but somehow nvidia manages to optimize newer models better. Nothing new really.
One of my main annoyances lately has been that when I play no man's sky no matter if I run low, medium, or high settings I can't run higher than 50fps average. In space I'm ok but thats expected. The 1060 at medium/high can do 60fps avg while the 480/470 barely manage 50. Then there is that AMD GPU are impossible to get right now without spending a fortune so even if I wanted a 480/580 I couldn't get one.

They've made alot of changes so this isn't very relevant anymore sadly. The 480 can do decent but only without Vsync which makes the game a tearing mess for AMD cards. Also with improved lighting and AO the games gotten a bit heavier. The 1060 still heavily outpaces the 480 in NMS either way
AMD has alot of tearing and stutter in NMS and just overall avg performance is sub par for what they should be able to do
Even on medium I can't get a solid 60 on a 470 when it should do it easily

The 1060 6 GB version is the best bet if you can go there. If you are going to hold on to the card for a long period, the extra VRAM gives you the extra headroom.

The higher memory doesn't make a ton of difference but for 30$ more why not? I figure I can clock out a bit higher on core and memory for a decent boost over regular 1060s
I went from a asus rog strix 470 to a pny xlr8 1060. I hate hate hate my 1060. Probabaly b/c it's the OC pny one, but hell it's loud and it's hot. Even though I sold the 470 for 320, I wish I nvr bought the 1060. I'm seriously thinking about putting it under water, which goes against everything I stand for from a value prospect.
PS..there are other things I dislike about the card such as dsr/vsr (whatever nvidia calls thier implementation) and washed out video, I have those as well on my 1050ti, but I prefer that card to the 1060

From what I'm seeing the card has some very healthy clocks compared to the competition - the highest OC clocks from what I'm seeing, it certainly is high-grade GTX 1060 material.
I just got noti today of a new one so no. I have already done it (full rbg tweak) though.
It was just one more thing on a laundry list of why I dislike the card. Heck my old r9 280 was quieter and ran cooler with 0 issues
Basically what I'm saying is if I could go back I would not buy the 1060 I bought. I would run my back up hd 7750 til prices came back down and mainly use my other pc with the 1050ti (which I like). Then I'd either get a 1070 or a 570 580.
Well i ended up going with the regular Gigabyte GTX 1060 vs the Aorus (needed to save that 30$ i was gonna spend). Not disappointed as the memory only adds maybe 2-3fps at most.
Thanks for the help guys
