I have been having some problems with windows freezing when I play games. The screen will stop responding with only the mouse being able to move, then that stops and I have to force shutdown my computer. It only happens occasionally while playing dota, but I just installed fortnite and I can't even get through the tutorial in the beginning without it freezing. Same thing happened when I got northgard a few months ago.
Just a side note, this doesn't happen when I am modeling, sculpting, rendering, or stress testing my system.
You need to start testing certain components to try and figure out whats causing your PC to behave that way. You can start by running some GPU/CPU benchmarks and monitoring your temps and how your components behave overall. by doing so you might be able to point out a faulty product. I would also take a look at event viewer> windows logs > system > filter current log > and check critical, error and warning check boxes as this would sometimes show you possible reasons of why your system would start to freeze.
Also keep in mind that it is possible that sometimes windows starts going nuts... I would ensure that you have no application running that may be corrupting windows normal operation. You can also ensure that you have all the latest security updates, windows updates, drivers versions and motherboard bios. All those can help route you to the cause of the error.
I recommend using HWmonitor and / or MSI afterburner to monitor your components and how they behave to different types of tests.
Hi thanks for the in depth post, I wan't expecting something like that. I don't believe it is the cpu, I have had it at 100% for over 24 hours while rendering stuff on my computer, and the temps don't go above 75. As for the GPU I have run furmark for an hour or so with no problems. Temps will reach 80 with no cpu stess, and 95 with cpu and gpu going at 100%. But while its doing this it doesn't freeze. I have run a memory test and nothing was wrong. Also I have a rainmeter skin I made that shows temps so I know during gaming that it isn't over heating.
In the event viewer I have 2 errors
The csvol service failed to start due to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
The CldFlt service failed to start due to the following error:
The request is not supported.
I am going to update the BIOS now and then report back.
I updated the BIOS and the same thing keeps happening. I think my next step is going to be to install windows on a spare HDD and only install the drivers, and the game and see if it does the same thing.
Well I was able to play the game for about an hour without it freezing so I assume it's a software problem. What's the best way to figure out what it is?

I'm not familiar with the last two, but I know for a fact that your sig rig would eat DOTA for breakfast. That's one extremely powerful computer to play DOTA with.
If DOTA is causing the freeze could you force DOTA to use dx9 instead of the default dx11 through the console?

All three crash on my computer. None of them crash the computer since I reinstalled windows, which is a little bit better. Fortnite is a new game from epic games and is in early access so the crashing on that is probably because of its infancy. But there is no reason DOTA should be crashing. I haven't really played any other games recently so I don't know if they will also crash. I will have to do a test tomorrow. I can try out dx9 the next time I play DOTA. Also after I reinstalled windows, DOTA sometimes will freeze, but I am still able to do things in game but the screen doesn't change at all.
If you're still dealing with issues with your system, it is sometimes hard to find out the issue with the components without having other parts to test with. Like for example if I think my graphics card or RAM chips are dying, I usually go over to my friend's or brother's PC to use their parts to test.

I have some ram that I can test, I have just been putting it off. If that doesn't work I will go to my brothers house and try out his graphics card. Does a Mem test not detect some problems?

Mem test will detect some problems but not all in my experience. Like for example when I first built my first 6700k build with early release of DDR4 memory, memtest did not detect any issues. however manually testing each stick of ram managed to pin point that there is something wrong with 1 out of 2 sticks of ram for example. so I had to return the bad stick to the manufacture. BIOS updates helped of course but did not fix my problem with the bad memory stick.
